Carry a $1000 deductible & pay attention to jag-offs in parking lots.

Hopefully, when it happens, someone else will be at fault...

The bumper test mentioned in this thread is old news but www.hwysafety.org has posted the first side impact tests, just small SUVs for now and most did poorly. The MINI Cooper, with its standard (in North America) side and head airbags should do well if the SUVs are any indication where those with side airbags got Good or Acceptable ratings while those without got Marginal or Poor ratings.

The IIHS uses a different side barrier, shaped like a pickup or SUV rather than the car shaped and sized one used by the gov't. Will be interesting to see how this lines up with the MINI.
