Offline | I read a summary of MINI the other day and the journo pointed out something I never thought of before which made sense to me and explains why MINI is what it is.. They said that because of the sheer size of the advanced rear suspension that is bolted to the back of a MINI the space in the rear is severely restricted. Restricted that is compared to a 'normal' hatchback - so MINI looses points in roadtests for the lack of rear passenger space and the teeny boot. However if you think of a MINI as a coupe like an Audi TT that has had a replica classic Mini rear welded on to give that classic Mini profile then you can appreciate it in it's true light - ie a coupe without a fastback. Thats how I see it - MINI is a 2+2 coupe - but that suits me with 2 small children a 'true' sports car like a Mazda MX5/Miata or Lotus Elise would be out of the question. So with MINI I get a sports car with two extra seats - brilliant! Problem is how com Peugeot ( 206 180 ) and Renault (Clio supersport ) can get great rear suspension PLUS romm in the back? |

Offline | I believe it would be called a MINI Cooper Couper. Got to give the nod to John, you know. Or, maybe if you fancy the other side of the Channel, it would be a ... MINI Cooper Cou-pay. |

Offline | regarding your comment re the Peugeot and Renault. The reason they get more space is the fact that their driving position is compromised due to the fact the front seats are mounted higher in the front to allow the rear seat passengers more space. If youve ever driven either of these( I have both) then you'll realise they both have awful driving positions, and limited head room compared to the mini. The mini was designed from the outset to have the same driving position as the BMW 3 series and therefore the rear seats were of secondary importance. Also it was originally designed to have a sloping rear roof. Read the book by Peter Robinson (I think). |

Offline | A quite important factor among the coupe category are the frameless windows! I love to open the slim doors with the windows down which supports the coupe impression and also gives an entry help in narrow parking lots. ![]() Klaus Donīt bother me with: Vans, SUVs and Grandpatronic |

Offline | I think in many ways the Mini is indeed a "coupe". The emphasis is on style and sportiness over function. As NewOne says, BMWs original design was a coupe with a sloping roof. The Rover team fought to make it a more conventional car with more rear space. |

Offline | Why all the crying about the Mini on this site? If you wanted a car to haul four 6' 6" gorillas and a months worth of luggage, why did you buy it? Coupe, Sedan Hatchback? Who cares? I didn't buy my MCS to use car pooling, else wise I'd bought a D@mn bus! The wife and I fit in fine and if at some point someone else has to ride along, getting in and finding room for their legs will be their problem. Also, if I wanted room for the royals lugage, I'd bought a van. As it is, I got exactly what I was shopping for. No buddy twisted my arm to buy a Mini. As to why the Peugeot ( 206 180 ) and Renault (Clio supersport )can have more room, WHO cares? |

Offline | Hey Rivette - my point exactly - I ain't complaining about legspace. It does cheese me off when Journos start off by carping on about no rear room in MINI - when they overlook that in an Audi TT cos the TT is a coupe and thats understandable. MINI is a roomy coupe - no problem |
