Offline | Hi everyone, My 2002 Mini Cooper was heavily damaged in the left rear corner. Its been over a month now & the parts are just being replaced. The entire left rear suspension, quarter panel,& fuel tank & tire/wheel are being replaced. In addition, the frame (actually the unibody) needs to be straightened. My question to the body shop people out there is...Can this car be properly repaired? The original estimate was about $4600 & that was without taking anything apart yet. By this time, I'm sure the estimate doubled. What should I be looking for to make sure this car can safely carry my infant daughter & wife? Are there certain alignment specs that I should make sure are back to original factory settings? What questions should I ask the body shop when I pick up my car? All helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Offline | The body shop guys usually do a good job. But if you're concerned about the integrity of the car after being repaired, it may be that you'll never really trust the car again (this is why you should talk to your insurance company about "diminished value"). If you're worried about the body strength afterwards, it's probably fine, but I'd try and sell it and get a new one, just for your peace of mind. Offline | Check the alignment of each of the panels. That gives a good idea of how straight the car is. The gap when the doors are closed etc. Though as chiph said, if you don't trust the car, its not worth it. Many people who have similar major accidents sell their cars and get new ones. With the high residual values, and diminished value if you can get it from your insurance company, it probably won't be much of a loss if you go that route. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |
