Angry Broken Mirror!:( Service manual??

I woke up this morning to my MCS with its passenger mirror gutted. Some punk ripped in right out, wiring and all! Not only that but, it appears they played alittle game of soccer with it down the sidewalk. . .found pieces of the poor thing a block away.
I'll never park it on the street again.
I got a quote from the dealer: $400 including labor.

Pretty steep for a mirror.
Has any one had a similar issue?
Is there a comprehensive service manual available that could help me in installing a new one myself?

(note: I just waxed it yesterday. . .the car gets more attention than any other: sometimes its unwanted!)

I haven't heard of a service manual being available to anyone other than a dealer. And these days they are usually only available on CD or DVD.

With Mercedes you can subscribe to their service manuals online, and you can subscribe for something like one month or a full year. But the yearly rate is so high ($300 I think) only someone in the repair business could justify it for that length of time.

Good luck though. I can imagine how upset you must be.

There's a thread on service manuals in performance an tuning at the moment: http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=36538 if you do a search you'll also pickup all the other threads.

In your case the $25/day option seems fine. Also, a new mirror seems like a great junkyard item for not very much money. Its annoying when things are not worth claiming because of your deductable...

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

I have a copy of the BMW TIS CD ROM

The section on replacing the door mirror shows it to be quite straightforward.

With the mirror in place, turn the mirror (the whole housing) to get access to the front two mounting bolts, and remove the bolts.

Turn the mirror the other way to access the rear mounting bolt and remove it.

The mirror comes away. Disconnect the door mirror connector (plug type connector).

Looks like 10 minutes work at most.

In your case, if the mirror has been ripped off the car, then I presume that there has been damage both to where the mirror bolts onto the car, and the wiring, which is upping the cost of the repair job.

PMM, thank you for that info. . .if I'm just reconnecting the wires do I have to worry about the cars computer system (resetting it in some way to recognize the reinstalled mirror?) or do I just simply need to first remove the proper fuse?

Also, if you have a moment, could you provide the numbers of the parts that make up the mirror assembly? I believe there are about five parts total. . .I ask because I may be able to salvage some of what remains intact; others will need replacing. Needless to say, I'd rather not purchase the whole assembly.

thanks to everyone for the info. . .

I looked up the tis disc on ebay. . .but it seems no one has the 2003 disc. . . why is that?

Before I add anything else, I must mention that I am just an owner of a MINI who happens to have a copy of the BMW TIS CD Rom.

I would guess just removing the fuse before doing any work, or if you want to be extra careful, disconecting the battery. I can not see any reason why anything would need to be reprogrammed, and there is no mention of needing to on the CD.

Sorry, I only have the TIS disk (service & repair instructions), not the ones with the part numbers. The instructions do talk about being able to remove the motor assembly, so I would guess that it, the exterior cover and the gasket are separate parts. Probably the best idea is to go to the parts counter with what you have left, and get them to look it up on their system.

Because nobody has 'borrowed' a copy and run it through a CD burner yet The one I have covers the MINI One and Cooper for the 2001 & 2002 years.

If you are looking on ebay, don't just search for MINI, the one I bought was just advertised as BMW and was a fraction of the price of those advertised for MINI, at £4 ($6.50) inc P&P. I obviously checked with the seller that it covered the MINI before purchase.
