Offline | Due to pick up nice new MINI on Wednesday and someone was buying my old private plate off me from my trade in car. Then they backed out. But over the weekend they came back and said they wanted it again and gave me a deposit for it. So, busy at work today and had to ask the parents if they wouldn't mind going into DVLA local office and finding out if I took the private plate off the existing car would I still be able to trade it in on Wednesday. Girl in DVLA told them it takes about a week, took the money for transfer and the REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS!!! Cant get a hold of the dealer or the DVLA now but am looking at the worst outcome - that dealer wont accept my trade in without registration documents and DVLA wont send them out till next week sometime, then by the time I get a day off work, its going to be about an extra 10 days before I get the MINI.... So, a couple of questions if anyone can help 1) how long does it take to put a private reg no onto retention and get the new number? Is it do-able in 48 hours? 2) will a dealer take a trade in without the registration documents (think I know the most likely answer here!) Any help, or suggestions, would be most welcome. I'll let you all know how I get on tomorrow after I talk to DVLA and the dealer. DEVASTED. ![]() |

Offline | If you take your documents into a DVLA office they should be abke to put it on retention and issue the orignal number immediately although the V5 will be sent on later. I had to wait 10 days recently for my dealer to transfer my cherished plate onto a new registration. The DVLA would not do this over the counter (be nasty to dealer week) and then took 10 days to complete the transfer. I am still waiting for the V5 for the Mini I traded in which I have to send on to the dealer. In my case the dealer (John Cooper Works) were OK with the trade-in wthout the V5 (they did this because of the problems with the DVLA). I do not think your dealer will take your trade-in without the V5. I spoke with another MIni dealer recentlynabout the DVLA delays and they said they were no longer going to handle the cherished plate transfer for customers and that the customer would have to complete this because they would not take the trade-in without the V5 (ie. the cherished transfer completed). I think you could be in for a bit of a wait. ![]() |

| MINI2 Master | A retention can take normally 24hrs while a reg transfer can take upto 5 days and they may ask to inspect the old car with the private plate still on there ![]() S for Smiffy "Kids in the front seat cause accidents, accidents in the backseat cause kids!" |
