Funny seeing this thread. Was at an advanced driving school the other day and there was a G35 on the track as well. He could pull away from me on the straight but by turn 3-4 I was right on him and on his bumper just before the main straight. Now, this being said this was a school and no one was racing, in fact I think I was catching him more because I was taking better lines through turn 2-3 and I was pushing a little harder than him. That being said he finally gave me the signal to pass him and I opened up away from him quite quickly.

However in a straight line the G35 is MUCH quicker. I also LOVE the styling too, very classy. Not saying the MINI isn't but I find the G35 one of the nicest cars on the road.

I went head up with a gorgeous Mini Cooper S at New England Dragway like the one you describe: red with white stripes and immaculately shined polished and chrome pieces all over the exterior, interior, and engine compartment... just beautiful. Girls would start to walk up to my glossy black G going "oooooo" then spot the Mini next to me and go "Oooooo--Awwww, I want one!" The guy had a racing banner across the top of his windshield that I've forgotten the name of, but I think he was the actual tuner because he was there working on a couple other guy's Minis with the same sticker.

Anyway, I had a poor, 14.7 second run in my 5AT and still left him more car lengths back than I could easily count. Unfortunately there was a glitch in the timeslip that had him getting from the 1000 meter to the 1/4 mile mark in 1.3 seconds to finish at 14.8 (which should be impossible), so I have no idea what his actual quarter time was. Well, he was a full second behind me at the 1000 meter mark and had been fading further behind at each previous mark, so he should have finished just under 16 seconds. Immediately after the race he came around to look at my engine (as if expecting to find something unusual there), but I didn't get to talk to him. I think perhaps the Mini guys don't really know about the G35. For coupes, our cars are pretty damn big and heavy, which is not what the Mini is about. I like and respect the little cars, but the Mini isn't an exceptional dragster, even well-tuned. But if they were RWD, I may have bought one instead of my MX-5.

Do watch out for the John Cooper Works limited edition Mini coming out soon though. That one has been bumped up to a little over 200hp, which at that weight should put it right next to a 3-Series or a 5AT G35 Sedan. I'd love to watch it kill some Hondas.

I think this guy needs to go to Englishtown some Friday night
He said 14.8 is impossible. How many sub 15s are on Andy's spreadsheet?

LOL! How'd you find this one, Guru? I'm the one who posted that I switched to a MINI and got totally FLAMED. The posts have since been edited by a moderator so you won't catch the full flavor anymore. Basically I was called senile, menopausal and all MINI forums were called crap. But of course the smart people appreciated my position.

What's really sad is I can tell that the main insulter created three new accounts, two in order to continue calling me names, one to support me in another thread so he could accuse me of doing the same thing! He claims he can see what ISP I'm posting from, but of course you'd have to have access to the Web sites' control panel in order to do that and he's just a regular member.

Oh boy save me from Internet psychos! I've met too many. He has since apologized for the name-calling but is still complaining that everyone is backing me up and should just drop it already. LOL! Can dish it out but can't take it.

I think most of the posters had fair comments about the MINI, with the exception of 2 clowns with a p*nis size deficiency.

Well, I don't have the MINI yet so ... but I have no regrets so far. The G35 coupe is a great car, but the manual is too much for traffic - the clutch is stiff, gearbox notchy, blech. I was going to get the AT and give up the fun of shifting myself.

I love the manual on the MCS and I love that I can mod the heck out of it - that will make it interesting for a good many years to come.

I think its stupid that some people can't talk about any other car than their own being quality. I absolutely love the MINI but its not the only car that I find impressive. There are loads. People on that site were proper slating the MINI without even driving it. For me the MINI Cooper is the car, I don't expect everyone to share that opinion but I do expect people to respect it. If everyone liked the same car wouldn't that be a bit boring

Oh on the time slip for those who havent figured it out.. cat didnt say the 14.8 wasnt possible he stated the last 320 feet in 1.3 was. which i sort of agree and dis agree . from the time slip last night a car who ran 14.6 who is a possible low 13- high 12 second car (he missed third gear shift) did that last 320 feet in 1.4 seconds. So its possible if the guy didnt squeeze the NOS until the end in the MINI if hes running it. Which would also explain why he was lookiing at the G's motor. Btw on the 15.2 pass i made Last night. took 2.4 Seconds to do the last 320 feet.

People need to remember that roads are not straight drag strips - there are very few roads that are just straight (except Nullabor plains in australia - over 100kms without a corner ). Out sprinting someone off the lights doesn't necessarily mean that you have a faster car - I prefer to go around corners than drive in a straight line.
Hearing people that drive non modded MINI's are trying straight line drags show that they really do not understand what the MINI is all about. I always wait until the corners start, then I leave them for dead.

Dutchy.

Sadly INIMINI is gone, but never forgotten.

Well I went to drive a G35 before I bought my MINI, but didn't take it out because I coudn't fit in the car. No headroom for anyone over 6 foot tall. Really appalling.

I find it funny that the "small" MINI has so much more (front) passenger space than other bigger cars.

The 350Z/G35 combo feel ummmm claustrophobic to me.

Don't care for the accomodations of either.

What's even worse is the new Infiniti SUV (I think it is called the FX45). Huge and bloated on the outside and cramped and uncomfortable on the inside. Beastly thing. Salesguy claims they drive great but I was claustophobic in two minutes inside that thing.

I was surprised at how inefficient the interior of the Infiniti FX45 was. It seems they tried to blend a Sports coupe, station wagon and a bloated SUV all in one. I am not sure if that combination really works.

Nice powertrain, questionnable space and looks. Too rich for my blood as this thing appraoches the $50K price mark.

Another offender in the "Poseur" SUV category is the BMW X5. More cramped than a 5 series wagon.

Yep. This is another prime example of big on the outside crampted on the inside design.

I don't know about you, but I've had so many people ask, "How do you fit in that little car"?

I love it when this happens because I will pop the car open and say, "Well, have a seat". Rarely fails to elicit a gasp when they jump in and realize just how spacious the MINI interior is in front.

Talking

I have to laugh at this post because it hits close to home.
I was impressed with the dramaitc improvement in Nissan/ Infiniti design direction and thought I would look into a G35. I was actualy test driving a G35 back in June when a MINI passed us. I read up on the MINI but I did not know if it was for me. The Dealer caught me looking at the MINI during our drive and commented on it's cool styling but "I hear they are behind in production causing 6 month wait times and the dealers are jacking the price by $2000". Well I had to check them out after that comment. Long story short I ordered my MINI Cooper S that week. When I called the Infiniti dealer to let him know I will not be buying the G35 his response was "I understand ,they are a cool car, I guess you changed your mind about a serious sports car?". I did not bite on his retort but I did correct him by letting him know I paid sticker with only a 10 week wait. She arrives next week
Motor on Y'all

Mini Cooper S
Pure Silver w/ Black top, Premium Package
She arrives first week of September (hope hope)
Her name shall be Sterling
