Offline | aaargh! My Cooper was stolen Sad news...my 2002 green Cooper was stolen in the middle of the night here in suburban California. Pretty brazen theft, since the (@#*!)@(#*! thieves went through a side door in the garage, disconnected the automatic garage door opener, pushed up the door and apparently pushed the car out. Our garage is set back a ways on our property. It's been more than 48 hours since we discovered it gone, so hope is fading pretty fast. Hopefully the insurance will be easy to deal with. I'm going to my dealership to put in an order for a new one. Condolences and advice would be most welcome. Last edited by mini94519 : Aug 18th, 2003 at 06:00 AM. |

| MINI2 Regular | I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine what you're feeling. Don't worry, you'll be in a brand new shiney MINI before you know it and something very bad will happen to those creeps that stole yours. Keith 2004 DS/B MCS - Premium Package - Front Fog Lamps - Alloy Patina Dash - Alarm |

Offline | Thats sad news matey my deepest condolences. So how did they start it? Or did they tow it? What happens (in regards to insurance) if you order a new one and then yours turns up? Does the insurance company make you take yours back? That happened to my friend with his expensive ($3500) mountain bike. The mistake he made was not waiting for the letter from the insurance company giving the go-ahead to order a new one and that they would pay for it. Neeshil |

Offline | In terms of MINI ownership, that's the worst kind of news. I hope it all gets settled and your back in a MINI soon. Our trials and tribulations living in a "bleeding edge" eco house... Oxley Woods Living |

| MINI2 Newbie | Oh dear... I am in the same boat. My beloved Cooper was stolen in June. The horrible gits broke into the house and stole the keys.... Still my new Cooper S is arriving on the 29th (although I won't be able to drive it until the 1st)..So I will have to sit and stare at it all weekend. I hope that you are able to revsolve your insurance. |

Offline | How did they get it started? I thought they couldn't unless they had the key..due to the computer chip changing codes all the time...?? By the way, very sorry about it, hope you get it back or a new one soon. I just got mine and I would be crushed if it was gone:-( MINI is a way of life! |

Offline | Sorry, Just got mine and so am enjoying it. The only consolation is that when you get the new one you will have that brand new excitement all over again, althought the wait might well kill you prior to delivery. Its terrible news, but maybe they have just dumped it somewhere hidden and eventually the cops will find it.??!! theres always a little hope..chin up and a stiff upper lip usually does it for us Brits. |

Offline | This was the reason given to me by nearly all the insurers I tried to get quotes from. When I said why so hight they said my age was an issue as was the 0 ncd I had but most of all it was the car/model. They said they are considering the MINI cooper and S amongst some of the most thievable cars on the market at this time and so they are giving high premiums. Wierd huh!? |

Offline | Thanks, folks Thanks very much for the good wishes. It turns out they had stolen a full set of keys out of a gym bag (NOT in the Cooper), so that's how they got away. It's only the fourth day, but I'm optimistic the insurance company is going to be decent about this. To answer Neeshill's question, the insurance company said if the car's not recovered within 7 days, they would declare it a total loss and make a settlement offer. I think that as part of the settlement, they would take title to the car, so even if it's found later, it'll be theirs. This morning I'm off to order a new Cooper (my dealership has the fully-refundable deposit thing), and start checking around other local dealers to see if I can find one in stock to my liking. I'm told current orders are for the October production so I would get an ordered Cooper in December or January. I'll post an update within the week. |

Offline | happy ending Whew! Well, it looks like things have worked out just fine. The insurance company settled quickly, honestly and fairly. I actually wound up getting a few bucks MORE than what I had paid for the car, complete with taxes and fees, just over a year ago! Then to top it off, I just got my insurance renewal notice and my rates went down! Go figure. More importantly, my new pepper white/black cooper is scheduled for mid-October, so I hope to be back in one by Thanksgiving. ![]() |
