Ahh, Derbyshire - the posh end of the Midlands!!
I live a nomadic existance, wandering the roads of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire in my BMW 116i, driving un-nervingly close to the car in front (probably a toyota...), while flashing my lights at them in an angry fashion

(or maybe not )

Nah, thanks for the invitation but i've got other stuff i'd rather do at weekends, like not getting divorced for "going on about MINI's"

BG

ps. i rather enjoy mon-days

I've just got back from Cardiff - if there are any posh areas, I missed them

Had some fun with my almond green Cooper S with a BRG John Cooper Sport (EU reg. plates, but RHD) on the Severn Bridge coming back - it was blatting with rain, gusting cross-winds, and we were screamins across the bridge yards apart at a speed that neither car can manage according to the Rover manual! (And if Johnny Law's listening, I didn't say I was driving )

I'm on the border of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, BTW. Also not a posh area

Back to the topic, I'd have thought the *only* MINI owners that know of the LTB and would want to take part are *enthusiasts*, who more than likely owned a classic Mini not so long ago. For the Mini fraternity to give them two fingers is just plain daft (not to mention rude).

This isn't about Mini vs MINI (I love both, and see both cars as "classics"). It's about cliques, snobbery, reverse snobbery (my car's tattier than yours!), and plain bloody mindedness! Odds on a MINI driver who flashes a Mini driver *loves* the original, but probably chooses not to drive one for very good reasons.

[rant mode on] BTW, latest saga in the life of the classic Mini I drive is a tap on the shoulder from Johnny Law tonight. "Was I going a bit quick, Officer?" I ask defferentially. "No, your rear light's not working - sort it." *Why* is my rear light not working? Cos the boot was stripped to replace the boot floor just *days* ago due to rust, and the moronic mechanics have obviously not wired the lights back up properly! Sheesh, on the road 2 days before the *latest* problems with British workmanship show up. Love the car - fantastic to drive, swine to own. Rant over.

Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though.

Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed

Dont come on the official run in your MINI as this is likely to fuel the anti Mini debate further. I have no probs with you parking up in Brighton itself but please try and remember this run is always over subscribed and so lots of upset classic, (or real), Mini owners will be around. Give it another year or so and things will change.
P.S. I will be there, if I can get a ticket. (But my MINI will stay at home.)

Martyn, MiniCooperS is just offering advice. No one is telling you what to do. It is a fact that there are some Mini owners who take this anti-MINI stuff way too far. Now if such a person applied to go on the L to B and had their application turned down, how do you think they are going to react if they see a new MINI in "their" place?
I'm not condoning the nutters who take the Mini V MINI stuff to the extreme, I'm just pointing out how easy it will be to antagonise them. Is it worth it just so that you can join in an official traffic jam all the way to Brighton???
Save yourself the aggro and forget the official run. Park up in Brighton and join in the fun.

Mon

PS Woohoo that last line rhymes. Maybe it can be the official MINI2 slogan for this years L to B?

Yeah, but if the MINI is parked on the street the reason for damaging the car (if such *******s need a reason) is not quiet so clear as if you're on an official Mini run that they haven't been able to get on...

I'm not going on the run, so I'm not that bothered how many MINIs enter or how many get accepted. I just don't want any MINI owners who find their cars damaged after the event, to start tarring all classic Mini owners with the same brush...

Also it is more fun going straight to Maderia drive, which is why the majority of classic Mini owners do this...

What's in a name

Perhaps BMW should have called the car the "Goblin" instead of a Mini.

Would have saved a lot of bandwidth.

Then you'd have all the Dungeons and Dragons geeks complaining, especially when the new BMW GOBLIN owners insisted on taking it to every Dungeons and Dragons covention...

My point exactly Mon, my point exactly....... sooner everyone realises it's a paradoxical issue the better.

Mind you the Daily Mail readership in the UK is still pretty high, so maybe there is little hope !

cheers

I don't think that the Goblin is a good idea, I think that the car being associated with a easily carried around vaccum cleaner will do no end of long term damage.
My proposal would be the BMW Dyson...

Cheeky.....!

Or the event should be called the 'Get up at the crack of dawn to park up in a muddy field - then queue up for 10 minutes for free can of Redbull - loose other club members whilst waving at other minis - stop off for loo-stop at services - take wrong turn - see no minis til Brighton outskirts - sit in traffic - spend the rest of the morning trying to park - but have fun in Brighton - hoot like a madman on way home run !'
