Offline | Rover makes the 5 speed for the MC, as it was already in production and fit the bill, and was reliable, but not sturdy enough for the MCS's or D's torque, so Getrag made the 6 speeds for these models. The connection with BMW and Rover is going south, so Getrag is going to supply the 5 speeds for the lower powered models as well in the future. |

Offline | I think it will. The getrag 6 spd in the S seems to be a very solid box that's caused minimal troubles. If the new one is as good, it would be classified as a definite improvement. -- '03 S B/W |

Offline | Its simple. There have been many replaced current 5 speed transmissions, and none (that I know of) in 6 speed under warranty. If Getrag's 5 speed is of similar reliability its an improvement, but one never really knows until the cars been on the road for a bit. If you read this post: http://www.mini2.com/forum/general-discussion/38569-getrag-trans-base-cooper-2004-a.html it explains most of it. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

Offline | The original MC 5-speed transmission was made by Midland Powertrain. Midland will stop making the transmission for future MCs, which, as noted in an above post, will be made by the German company Getrag. I am sure it will be an improvement, although I have no problem with the current 5 speed transmission. |

Offline | Lets hope so. I must admit I really don't like the Cooper S gearbox but hopefully they will design the Cooper 5 speed for the kind of people that drive Coopers. What I mean is I don't really like the sporty drive with the stiffer suspension and gearbox and that I why I prefer the Cooper. I like the fact that the two cars are so different and I think they will ruin the drive of the Cooper if the gearbox is like the Getrag 6 speed. |

Offline | I am guessing you are actually quite off-topic on this thread, because I doubt they would have fitted one of the new (well, already an entire model year down the line already) Getrag boxes, because I doubt they actually fit to older models. There's at least one thread about replacing the old Midlands unit in the dedicated Cooper forum. |
