United-Kingdom Filling up with petrol

Ok bit of a trivial post but hey what the hell

Has anyone else noticed that when you fill up with petrol at Safeway you can't actually fill her up? The nozzle doesn't fit in very snuggly and no matter how hard you try when you look at he petrol gauge its never full Does this happen with any other petrol stations ??? I have filled up at other staions and had no problem it just seems like a weird thing to suffer from and i did just panic a bit on my 1st fill up.

My gauge never reaches "full"
(Usually a needle thickness low!!) But, at 40+mpg it's not a big deal!!

I have had this problem a few times at various garages. Sometimes to the extent that the pump turns it self off and I have to pay for one lot of fuel and then continue to fill up again. A man at a Shell Garage with a MCS said he uses a length of plastic fuel tube to go down the side of the nozzel to let air out of the tank so the fuel flows in easier. I haven't tried this myself yet, but I might give it a go.

This is usually a problem with the pump cut off being too sensitive and the angle of the nossle into the fuel tank. Apparently if you turn the nossle upside down and fill up it doesn't happen. Haven't tried it myself but be warned that the pump may not cut out at all, leaving you with soggy shoes (not to mention fuel down the side of your pride and joy).

It was acceptable in the 80's

Early cars had a fuel fill balance problem, you do'nt say how new your MINI is, the tank is in two sections either side of the exhaust, so the fuel should 'balance itself' between the two halves, my first car (2001 spec) would indicate full on the gauge at the pump, the i'd drive a 1/4 mile and it would take another 10 litres easily. The balance pipe, breather was modded to make it fill properly, should take near 50 litres from almost dry. If no " take me to your dealer"

The thing is, when petrol stations are built, or are restored, they usually have reconditioned, used pumps installed. Older pumps are slower and less sensitive to a full tank, there is nothing you can really do about it, and if you start using the pumps upside down, the garage person will go on the tannoy and point it out, v embarressing.

The reason you have trouble with Sainsburys, is. When supermarkets build stations, they buy brand new pumps. And the newest pumps have a goldish coloured sleeve round the nozzle, this is because the new cars that take unleaded, they are sized for the right pump, so you dont put diesel in!!

This sleeve is metal, and reacts with the stop function that you have when your tank is full. When petrol touches it, it stops the pump. BAD
