Question Whining Sound

I've had my Mini for a week now and I love it!! But when I first start the engine or come to a stop I can hear a high pitched whining sound coming from the engine. I've heard other Mini drivers talk about this, can anyone tell me what the sound is please?

word on the street is that it is the power steering pump. completely normal. try to embrace it. When I turn my car off, it sounds like a jet engine winding down, which is quite an ego boost if you are not alarmed by it.

Thanks for that Dansmini, I know exactly what you mean about when turning off the engine.

Yep, just pretend like you've just landed your MINI on an aircraft carrier every time you turn off the engine, and you'll feel fine about the whole thing. Glad to be of some help on here finally!
As an aside, another whining sound I hear alot is "You're taking these corners too fast" from whoever happens to be with me in the car.

At first it seems annoying but in a few months someone will ask you about the whining noise and you'll look at them and say what noise?

It is the PAS pump it keeps power on after the key is turned off for about 1.5 seconds as it spins down to stop, I'm not sure why but thnk its something to do with the pump being electrically driven as opposed to belt on other cars. On the good side, you can turn off the engine and coast up the drive as the power steering keeps working on a MINI for a short while, it doesnt on more 'conventional' cars.
