Mini fire

Can someone clear this up for me. My husband called me and said a co worker had told him he had 2 minis and they both caught on fire. This no less scared me a bit. So I looked all over the internet and I found a few sites that say there had been fires. I never heard this before. Please shed some light on this situation. I really love the mini but I love life alot more.
Thanks mini mom

Forget to change the oil on anything for a long time and it will blow up. As far as it being common, never heard anything like that.

i was just in an accident 2 hours ago - got rear-ended by a drunk guy, and pushed into a truck in front of me...

my 2002 cooper caught on fire under the hood - luckily there was a cop right there and had a fire extinguisher...

my first thought was to get another mini, but if they catch on fire a lot, maybe something else is in order...

i was alone in the car...

the the drunk guy hit me more on the driver side in the back, which pushed me into the large pickup in front of me..

it was a little off to the driver side of the truck - it was a medium/large sized ford pickup, 2002 i think

it crunched up the hood on the mini, and i could see a few little flames under the hood - the guy in the truck pulled forward when i saw the fire, and i grabbed my ipod and hopped out

i think i'll buy a nice new S now

That is a very important point - the safety system of the MINI. We've seen numerous pics on here of folks that have had their MINI's wrecked in an accident but they nearly all come out of them with cuts and bruises only.

also my airbags dind't go off...

the way i was hit i would think that they would have gone off when i was pushed into the truck in front of me...

seems wierd buy i guess the mini had it's reasons...

also the warning blinkers turned on by themselves, which i though was kinda neat.

The doors also unlock (if locked) in the event of an accident like that. Or should do anyway.

If you didn't hit your head, then I guess the MINI got it right and you didn't need the airbag. If you did hit your head, maybe the MINI got it wrong. But it is ONLY a car.

Glad you're OK.

Two issues here.

A few VERY early cars (not sold in the USA) had a problem with the fuel filler and sparks. It only happened in testing, but still, sparking near fuel isn't good, so they recalled and fixed these cars.

Also, some people have had their sound deadening in the engine bay catching fire or smouldering. The official word is that this was due to external objects such as cigarettes catching in there and burning a bit, however this did seem to be a bit of a strange explantion. Also worth noting is that theyve changed the material of the lner too.

To be honest, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, you've probably more chance of being hit by a bus than your MINI catching fire.

I believe airbags only react to a primary frontal impact, as far as I know............

Apparently your husband's co-worker is trying to pull up a good prank on you. Don't believe him!! (Is not April's fool yet, isn't it?)

I have 2 MINIs purchased new and never had any kind of problems like that (My wife's '02 CVT has 19K miles and my '04 MCS has 3,200 miles). Is he talking about BMC made Classic Minis instead?

The new BMW MINIs are among the safest small cars in the planet.

I had a fire that started in the engine bay, however I wouldn't be to alarmed as mine was probably related to a new engine being put in a couple of days before !!

Loads of people have mini's and it is not a common occurence !!!

for some reason i thought MINIs also reacted to side impact. not that this applies to this particular accident, but it'd be nice to know if that's true or not.

Airbags fire in response to sensors which detect the type and speed of impact, so up to about 20mph they more than likely will not go off unless you are hitting an immoveable object like a tree or lamp post. Above this speed the sensors work in split seconds do decide whether to fire head, steering, passenger airbags and seatbelt tensioners. See the lose 14lbs of weight thread, the airbags on that car will probably not work at all.

And fires are very rare

There were some offtopic posts on this in another thread, I've moved those posts onto this main thread.

Please don't double post. Either reply (on topic) to a thread or create a new one. Doing both just confuses everyone. For more info check this FAQ: http://www.mini2.com/forum/general-discussion/12769-multiple-posts.html

Ah, there you go.............
And they are expensive to replace, so the less mis-fires, the better..........
