i wentto get an S2000 aerial for the cooper, and the honda garage tried to get me to t rade in for a typeR, tempted but nah. Jap vehicles are very reliable though, good build quality and honda have a reputation for producing good strong cars with an edge.

When I originally was buying a MINI I did test drive the R-type and found it a truely superb car but a bit manic compared to the MINI. However now given my apathy towards MINI I'd prefer an R-type

I'm tempted at the moment to go to a Honda dealship and see if I can do a straight swap for one

Martin,
More problems with your S? Hope not. The Type R is awesome, but a bit manic in my view for everyday use.

I'm bored of my MINI
The new suspension setup has killed a fantastic car
I feel al the character has gone. It's now just a means of getting from A to B. I'm thinking a year or so sabatical from MINI could do me some good.
An R-type could just be the fillup I'm looking for

I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket (or Schnitzer, which is kind of official) spring setup and some new wheels and tyres.

I'm enjoying this 'S' more than any other MINI I've spun around in, despite the softer suspension. But I think that's quite easily solved.

Just need to find some cash! Which isn't so easily solved!

Can't say I've driven a Cooper S since the Works one in the summer. I've heard about these changes but didn't realise things were this bad. I did drive a 53 plated Cooper just before Christmas and noticed no changes with that. Still think I may get an S in time though - would have one over the Type-R any day of the week.

The problem with Schnitzer is that I want to keep my insurance premiums low....
Not sure how possible that is after my "ditch" incident last year

Anyhow my current insurers are by far the cheapest (around Ģ500) but don't allow aftermarket upgrade so I'm a bit of a quandry....

I guess I'll investigate in June when my premiums are up for renewall

I test drove the type r recently. Nice car, especially with the recent revisions to the range New interior trim, lights, bumpers etc. engine revisions.
However, I found the steering overly assisted, it was too light for me. Also the brakes did not seems as good as on my cooper, may have just been the test car They didn't seem to have much 'feel', i didn't know i was going to stop until I had stopped, if you know what i mean.
The rate at which the rev's rise, and speed, is very quick if not unbelieveable. The handling seemed good, but the car wandered a little, probably due to the 17" alloys. You do sit quite high, which I still don't know if I minded or not.
Overall I wasn't impressed enough to replace my cooper

My 2003 Civic Si is made in Swindon England with the Type R but the Civic Si is NOT the same thing as the Type R.

The Type R has 200hp the Si has 160 hp. But to make it even more confusing.. in Canada, the Si = the SiR which is still only 160 hp. The main reason the USA does not have the REAL Type R is that it would compete too closely in price and performance to the Acura <Honda> RSX Type S which is also 200 hp like the Type R.

Anyhow.. I am trading for the Cooper S that I ordered Dec 20th. There are miles of difference between the Si and the Cooper S..160 hp vs 163 but the supercharger makes much more torque than the normally aspirated 160 hp of the Si.
If we had the Type R it would be a hot competition as I can imagine it is "across the pond"

Have you had a go in W's Schnitzer demo Paul? I haven't driven it, but it looks very low.

I've driven them both, The Type-R is quicker but, It's bigger, the interior is boring, it's pretty boring to drive, I didn't like the seats (The Accord Type-R ones are nice though).

But, from 7-9000rpm it sounds like a touring car

I prefer my MCS (to pretty much nay other car out there)

The Type R is a VAN my friends...no need to compare with our beloved oneīs, cooperīs and Sīs...
Did you ever see where they placed the gear stick? How the hell are you supposed to shift faster than in the mini with that one??? There once was a comparison between the Cooper S, Civic Type R (..or Si) and the Seat Leon Cupra R in the evo (www.evo.co.uk). The result was that even with some 45 HP less than the others, the mini would blow at least the Cupra away...enjoy reading...just have a look at road tests - archive...

Some mags have described that the CIVIC Type-R has the best gear change ever!
