Offline | Cooper S vs Civic Type R The day before I ordered my MCS I went to test drive the Honda Civic Type R. I really wanted the Type R, and on the plus side it was even cheaper than the MCS, but by the time I had finished my test drive my insurance company had finished the calculations on re-mortgaging my flat to cover the premium! (in short it would have been £3000+ per year ). However, in hindsight I feel that I made the right choice with the Mini, despite being a slightly slower car. I am rather interested to know if anyone here has been tempted to stray from the righteous path of Mini and buy a Type R, or conversely have any Type R owners seen the light and moved over to Mini? And to be honest, even if you have no idea what a Type R is it would be nice to hear from you, as it is rather depressing to post a thread and get no replies! Talk amongst yourselves...Adam |

Offline | I'd never buy any Japanese vehicle, been in an accident with a honda and a nissan ... the honda was the scariest, 35 mph accident passenger door was pushed tight against the stick shift, thankfully no passenger was in that car or ..... well you get the idea, those images always come to my mind when anyone mentions Japanese vehicles, I just can't past them. |

Offline | I was not aware of that. However (and correct me if Im wrong), I dont think the Type R is available in the US. And if it is, go for a test drive, just for a laugh. It is @&£$*@ quick and is the super-hot-hatch to beat at moment in Europe. Unlike the Mini though it has no real character and seems soul-less, but I would recomend it as a good way to kill an hour on a day off... |

Offline | My friend has one and gives me a lift in in regularly. Points to note are: 1. It is huge 2. Seems very well put together, no real rattles etc A bit bland inside but that's only compared with the MINI which is over the top for a lot of tastes. 3. Seats are superb 4. Very noisy engine even in town - some may feel that's part of the experience though 5. Extremely quick - faster than a standard S 6. Equipment spec not as good. No traction control, only 2 airbags, AC is a £1200 option. 7. Ride a bit more jittery than a MINI 8. Insurance gp 17 v 15 for S 9. No TLC First service cost £135.On the whole it is an excellent car. I would consider one against an S if it wasn't so big (my wife likes a wee car) and more expemsive to run than a MINI. Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | The R-type is available in the US, it's called the Si ![]() If I were doing it all again I'd probably go for the R-type ![]() When I originally was buying a MINI I did test drive the R-type and found it a truely superb car but a bit manic compared to the MINI. However now given my apathy towards MINI I'd prefer an R-type ![]() I'm tempted at the moment to go to a Honda dealship and see if I can do a straight swap for one MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime ![]() ![]() Unofficial MINI2.com bean counter |

Offline | Im pretty sure that the Si is a seperate model from the Type R, as the Type R is only built in Swindon in the UK, and goes under no other names. A word of warning though, i found the difference in cost between insurance group 15 and 17 rather alot. I nearly bought the Type R after the test drive without even checking what the insurance would be. Good thing I didnt, but I was amazed that the MCS insurance was nearly half the price of the Honda. Strange eh... |

| Yeah...I know !!! | my friend has a type R the road noise when driving around town is quite loud for a modern car .it actually souned like the rear bearings had gone !!! Plus it tram rails on the motorway really badly and it doesnt handle as well as a Mini he says. I think the interior is very bad and i dont like it but each to their own . ![]() |

| seventh heaven? | I test drove a type R and MCS more or less back to back. The Honda is definately quicker and it is good drive, I didn't think it was quite the all round package that the MINI offers though....and I am convinced I would have lost my licence by now if I had bought one as you just feel the need to cane it everywhere to make the most of the engine. ![]() ![]() Black to the future.... |

| MINI2 Regular | I havnt driven a Type R, my friend has one and it is quick. But the handlings not as good, in an a shoot out off the lights and again on the test track (ok M4) my MCS was quicker. But I have a few mods to take me to just over 200bhp. They are nice cars though, would definatly consider one if the MCS wasnt available. Offline | My main problem with the Type R (and call me fickle if you like), is that it is SO BLOOMIN UGLY. Sorry, but I like to have a car that looks AND drive nicely. Or at least isn't offensive to look at. There aint no party like my nana's tea party |

Offline | I don't think there are too many topics which haven't been brought up before - but so what! MINI2 has new member joining every day - and if all we did was read old threads it would be a pretty dull place. I suggested the Type R to my wife - she asked for a picture and ruled it out on sight! It is the most shapeless lump of metal (great value and very practical tho'.). A 200bhp MINI can keep up easily One last thought - I love to see a "speccing my Type R thread". With 3 colours and almost no options it would be a short discussion ![]() ![]() |
