Sunroof blind is not "dense" enough

Here in sunny South Africa, my bald spot still gets sun burnt through the closed sunroof and closed blind! Any ideas on making the blind or sunroof more "dense" (for want of a better word) to prevent the sun from shining through?

You could put on one of those sunroof-only perforated roof flag decal jobs....they are said to cut down the light and look pretty cool.

Or there is always Rogaine

I put paper between the retractable screen and the sunroof, when the sun is too bright. Easy, and also easily removed.

I had a bunch of cheap window tinting material leftover from an old project and applied some to my sunroof last summer and had a pretty good result.

It was a 20% grey vinyl static-cling type that you simply cut to size, moisten the surface and use a squeegee to attach it. There's no adhesive so it's easy to peel off if you don't like it, or if you mess it up.

A good way to trace the areas that you need to cut is to lay the material on top of the sunroof and shine a lite up from below.

Some of the drawbacks were:
  1. It's a two person job to apply since gravity works against you while you try to get enough material to contact the window surface to keep it from falling off.
  2. The stuff I used was so cheap, the sun's heat ended up shrinking the material, causing it to eventually fall off. I found I had to pre-shrink the stuff in boiling water before cutting a new set.

Hoffie,

Sell what you have and buy one without the sunroof. You will save 60 pounds(27Kg) placed at the top of your car. You would lower the center of gravity and reduce the overall weight of the car, increasing the performance capabilities all in one shot. Plus, no more sun burned scalp.

If you choose a white roof it will reflect sunlight and keep the interior cooler as well.

I did the same with a road map to block the sun. Opened the sunroof on Rt. 95 at speed and Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont got sucked out real quick They then got stuck on the radio antenna and made quite a ruckus as the map shredded and flapped in the wind. Gave us , and those folks from New Brunswick gawking at us, a good laugh.

Arn't there any aftermarket replacement screens that are solid instead of perforated?

Trust not the heart of a man for whom old clothes, and the Mini, are not venerable!

Most professional window tinting shops refuse to tint glass sunroofs because they claim it can cause the sunroof glass to shatter on hot days. I don't know if it is really a risk, or just an "old wive's tale" in the industry.

My shade was replaced since some fool stretched it out when the car was on the showroom floor. Replacing them requires removing the headliner - not an easy task.
