MINI One - Cooper Sales Split (UK).

Thought people may be interested to know that as of Feb 2002, the MINI Cooper/MINI One sales split is 60/40 in favour of the Cooper.

This surprised me, I thought the One would have sold less than this.

Looks like a big hole in the front to me.. It'll come in handy for catching bugs in Summer though..

As for the ONE sales split, it doesn't really suprise me from what I've seen at the dealers. Most salesmen seem to 'sell' the Cooper and then mention in passing that there's this other model that's a few grand less...at which point the 'floaters' often opt for the ONE instead. They get all the looks and the prestige of owning a MINI, without the higher insurance and price tag!..

I went foe the Cooper as it has the chrome and IMHO looks superb. The bonnet of the S looses the smooth slope and the hole, scoop, letterbox, whatever is a wee bit naff.

I seem to recall hearing, way back when, that BMW were predicting a 2/3rds-1/3rd split in sales in favour of the One, but from launch day onwards it's been the 60/40 split in favour of the Cooper that Paul was told.

Unsurprising that the Cooper gets the lion's share of the sales; but I'm also not surprised that the One holds it's own - after all, there's a fairly strong market to be exploited amongst the pensioners and hairdressers

Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though.

Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed

At launch, MINI predicted the 60/40 sales split. However, I remember seeing posted here by someone apparently "in the know" that the early sales split was 75/25. The same person also said take-up of the chili pack was 60% of Cooper buyers. I wonder if that has also come down.

MINI ONEs have a much smaller profit margin in them for the dealer. They were marketed to get it under the £10000 price barrier at a cost to profit %.

Canny buyers will get the One as better value and only add the extras that they really want. If you don't want the slight performance enhancement, if thats what you call its torque curve, then why fork out £1400 extra just so you can pay more insurance and suffer poorer fuel economy and a poorer ride over rural tracks?

Dealers of course will convince you that you want only a Cooper. One dealer I know hated letting buyers take a test drive in a Cooper and a One. Once they had driven both most customers remarked that they could not really tell much difference and cancelled their Cooper order to get a One.

Company car drivers too get a lower tax in the One than the Cooper due to the Ones lower CO2 emmisions.

Spend the extra cash on extra airbags. You might only get one chance to use them. In fact if you have the cash why not buy the lot, but please don't grumble at trade in time.

Not that I'm biased or anything.
