Oh well it happened

What a couple of weeks - last weekend out trying the new Canon 300D SLR I noticed the Mini sounded grindy when I was turning the steering felt rough - on Sunday afternoon went shopping ( my wife is 7 months pregnant so I have the mini all the time now ) as I walked back to the car I could see a dent in the passenger door yes somebody had driven up hit the door with their door and I expect left rather quickly

Monday I went to my dealer door could be fixed and they would quote me - also gave me the local company they use but thought the dent was too close to the door edge - double skin. Also I booked the car in for a service re the steering.

Phoned the repair company friday ok the bad dent and one little one that has been there a long time.

Car goes in for service - NEEDS A NEW STEERING COLUMN
They are also in short supply seems a lot are failing, 2-3 weeks lead time - at least still under warrenty (car is 2 1/2 years old now)

Friday he managed to remove both dents perfectly cannot be seen in any light (£90 well spent i think) Well done that man he was good

But he did notice our offside tyre is probably illegal worn real bad so looks like a new tyre - it is not related to the steering problem I have asked the dealers if the two are connected it is due to the way I drive through corners

so a new steering column probably £300 in repairs and parts

Oh well least I enjoy the car sorry for being a bore

I take it your car isn't under warranty?
The steering column is under warranty and even if you're out of warranty I'd as about it since it is a well documented problem on a fairly large scale. Can't hurt.

Car is still under warranty so the steering column is covered

Its the tyre and the dents that aren't

Grindy steering?

I get this very occasionally - it is only a bit grindy, but noticeably grindy none the less. What is the problem? I tend to ignore it and it goes away - it never lasts longer than maybe a couple of journeys at a time - very minor.

Should I be taking my car in to have it checked out? I am just nervous of doing this - whenever it goes in with one problem they seem to fix it, but create two more problems

Maybe have them check the suspension alignment to see if the balding is caused by it?

The steering colmuns are tricky to get hold of, though we keep a few in stock now...just in case.

Terrible English. No capital at the start of the sentence and what on earth is 'incase'?

Can someone knock his reputation points off please?

Sorry.

Just curious, so if I - oops - mispel a wurd, I would lose pontes? or if I start a sentance with out a capital letter, I should lose points? Or if my wording I use here in the USA is different from yours, I should lose points? Wow, this is a pretty tough message board to belong to.

Don't worry Pippin. It's a tongue in cheek 'in fight' between Minty and myself (we work on opposite desks at a BMW/MINI dealership) and I was just pulling his leg.
