Question Runflat tires ???

Can someone help me understand these runflat tires. I know the concept behind them, but say I get a flat and creep along to the nearest tire dealer.....

1) what is the likelihood that they will have a runflat tire?
2) can a regular tire be used in its place?
3) I cannot seem to find runflats listed on Tirerack...do you have to go to the dealer?
4) what kind of selection is out here & how expensive are these things?
