| Destroying your MINI | Help me convince my parents! Ok well I'm so very close to owning a Mini it hurts. Basically my parents want to get me a car to use after I graduate from college. They'll purchase the car in their name but I'll eventually take over the payments once I get settled. Anyways because I need their help in purchasing the car I need to convince them that the Mini is a good investment. They think Mini is a horrible investment since the parts are harder to get because there are fewer of them here (doesn't make sense to me really), and will have high maintenace costs etc...etc... I can't really tell them it's a reliable car either since from the stuff I've read on here I don't think it's a very reliable car (as compared to my '93 Accord where the only major thing I've done on it is to replace the radiator for $120. Approaching 200k miles!). If my parents were car enthusiasts it would be a different story, but because they only see a car as a mode of transportation to get you from point A to point B, only thing that matters is practicality and reliability. I've tried telling them it's not about practicality or reliability for me but something different and fun, and something that won't get stolen 5 times over a 4 year period. So what do you suggest? Sure I could let my dad test drive it and see what he thinks (he'd probably be more easier to sway than my mom), but the thing is I'd like to have the car by the time I graduate (which is end of May) and only way is to order the car by the end of the week. So any helpful ways to sell them the idea using my silver tongue? I really wouldn't want to wait until June or July to get the car...want to be able to show it off to my friends before I head out for North Carliona. hehe. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Offline | Tell your parents that the MINI is safe: ABS, CBC, Airbags, Side Airbags, Head bags, excellent brakes, primary safety and handling and a good crash rating. The MINI should also have a better than average resale value. Just don't let your dad test drive it or he may want to keep it. ![]() There is just one moon and one golden sun; And a smile mean friendship to ev'ryone; Through the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide; It's a small world after all. |

Offline | What is the time frame on "eventually"? If the answer is sooner rather than later, you should use an angle concerning the number of payments... # of payments your parents make vs. # of payments you will be making. If the number is heavy on your side, then why would you make payments on something YOU don't want. If you lose this discussion, and are forced to SETTLE for the type car your parents want to purchase...trade it when you take over the payments and buy a MINI ![]() Coop 2 (Speedy) - '07 DS/DS MCS |

| Aimee | I'm 18 years old and I just got my MINI back in August as a first car. My parents fell in love with the MINI the second we drove up to the dealership! Take your parents to a dealership, and I bet they'll do the same! MINIs are also very practical, despite their small and fun appearance. They may look small from the outside, but 4 fit comfortably. I'm sure your parents will start to warm up to the MINI as soon as they take a drive in one. Give it a shot! It's a great car! |

Offline | My suggestion is to keep the (admittedly reliable) Accord a bit longer and buy the MINI once you have a job and can afford it without your parents' help. It doesn't look like there is a real need for you to go into debt (and risk your relationship with your parents if they have to make the payments) at this point. Good luck. |

| Destroying your MINI | Wow thanks for all the suggestions! The thing is I want to get rid of this car. Yeah it runs fine and blah blah blah, but it's been stolen twice and is pretty much a mess. Only thing that it's good for is getting me to point A to point B. It doesn't even have a spare since when they stole the car they took what they can. It's just not the same when a car's been stolen, it just doesn't feel like mine and I have no desire to keep it. Also if I do keep the Accord, I'll be keeping it for an another 2-3 yrs or so since I have one more year of schooling to do before I can make some money, then off to more schooling. There really isn't a risk per say involved w/ my parents. If they say no, that's that. I would be disappointed but not going to throw a fit, but I'd just rather have them say yes =) As for the payments. I honestly don't know when I'll be taking over. Most likely in 2 years I'll take over the payments, but given that they're buying me a car using their excellent credit rating to get a low rate is something that also weighs heavily for them. And lastly the idea to take them to a dealership. Oh I want to very much but, they're really busy people and don't have time for things like that. Especially on such a short notice (I need to order the Cooper by end of the week). Well here's hoping my dad agrees to my proposition. hehe. And again thanks for all the suggestions. |

Offline | I agree with a comment above - earn some money and get one when you can afford it. Reading these pages I am amazed how many teenagers manage to get a MINI from their parents - I got a £250 fiesta that had been in the family for 15 years for my first car and I was 22! If you have to work hard for it - you will appreciate it more! Sorry to sound boring but the 'chip is firmly on my shoulder'. Good luck! |

Offline | Pick up the latest issue of Eurotuner. In there they have a small article in the front of the mag that talks about the resale value of cars after 5 years and 75,000 miles. The Mini Cooper came in third place holding 53% of its value. And after you drive your new ride off the lot your car appreciates in value. I can also relate to your situation as I am 20 years old myself, put as much money as you can down. It will be worth more to you. Have fun Lagston ![]() |
