Offline | Driving with Xenons on the Continent - a Correction OK, my source of info on the MINIs headlamps has got it wrong again. Some time ago I posted that the xenon-equipped MINIs would have a switch to convert them from RHD to LHD beam patterns, eliminating the need for those black sticky triangle bits. That info was wrong. Apparently it's the new MG lamp that has that switch; the MINI does not. The news gets worse. Because the MINI lamp is that nice, raked angle, and has the actual refraction lense set quite far back, the beam pattern cannot be converted with a straightforward application of sticky-backed plastic. Instead, you have to buy a more complicated overlay from a BMW dealer (who won't have them in stock when you're due to travel abroad, naturally, and will charge an arm and a leg for two bits of transparent plastic). People have suggested driving on the continent without any beam conversion - probably not a good idea that, as with the xenons in particular you're likely to dazzle oncoming drivers quite badly (they're bad enough when dipped properly). Needless to say, I'm unhappy and my source has been disciplined (again). ![]() Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though. Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed |
