OUCH ! (Outrageous Dealer mark-ups in California - CREVIER MINI)

Crevier MINI just opened today. I had been on their interest list for at least a year, so I was very interested in seeing their new operation. After seeing how they seem to intend to do business, I have to say that my enthusiasm is chilled (to the bone !). All of their available cars (Pre-specced Coopers only, of course, for the time being) have been "tricked-out" with aftermarket style wheels (17"), CD stacks, Lo-Jack (anti-theft gimmickry) and "Paint Protection", bringing the cost of a $17,000 U.S. car, to, hang on and hold your breath...right around $25,000 !!! And that's before tax, license and everything else. And, these cars didn't even have the Sports Package, that I could tell. I don't think these even had sunroofs !

A full-boat Cooper S shouldn't even cost that much ! I have to say that I am fortunate to live in an area (Southern California) that has a number of other dealers around, so assuming that I am still interested in a MINI and willing to wait a while, I have a choice as to who to buy from. But this is really rough, asking that much for a car that, let's face it, is just not worth it. I know that people will buy them anyway (they do look good with those wheels !) in fact, most of the cars were already sold. But, this is just wrong, IMO.

So much for "Let's Motor"...

bit more like, "Let's Extort"...

...

Guess we can only hope that with 4 nearby dealerships, Crevier's sales dwindle and they're forced to deal fairly, like Long Beach and Irvine appear to be doing.

...

Shame on you Crevier.

Unhappy Too Bad !

I found out today that all the MINI dealers in L.A. county are doing this. Assael, Nick Alexander, and Crevier all have markup and added-on packages. I put my name in all of their waiting lists, but none of them will use their waiting lists any time soon. Sales at Assael told me to call back in a couple years, and I put my name down on the waiting list more than 9 months ago. I only put my name on Long Beach and Irvine's waiting lists in January. I guess I will have to waiting til end of year. If anyone are on Long Beach and Irvine's waiting lists and don't want the car, please let me know !

I've been on the interest list at Long Beach MINI since the first day. Since then, I have been totally ignored and they have not answered any of my e-mails. I predicted last year that it will be a bidder's war for the early cars and that they will add "dealer installed extras" to get around the MSRP and increase profits. Several members here said I was wrong, that the cars would go for MSRP, but I know how car dealers operate and it looks like I was correct after all.

If the MINI dealers keep pulling this crap, it is going to backfire on them. For the same money that they will want for a Cooper S, I could buy a Nissan 350Z or a Subaru WRX. It appears the MINI is getting "fad status" that leads to price gouging, like what happened with the Miata, PT Cruiser and New Beetle, just as I predicted many months ago.

I agree this is totally wrong and shows no respect at all for the customer. However, the same reason we are all so interested in the new MINI is the same reason dealers can try and get away with this type of thing. I must admit that if UK dealers tried it I may have been put off the MINI enough to buy another type of car. The UK dealers are fair in the respect of selling at list price. However, with all dealers being franchises (I think its the same in USA) BMW have little control apart from not suppling cars, which would probably break the contract. If you want the car enough you either wait or pay extra. Maybe look for a dealer who is going to charge less. At least the second prices will be high for a few years. Here in the UK second hand cars are selling at dealers for more or less list price. Good Luck finding a MRSP MINI.

Well, there are three BMW owned store in the US, and they are not permitted to selll over MSRP. Unfortunatley for you West coasters, they are all over here on the east coast. However, if anyone is interested in being dealt with fairly and givin MSRP and wants to drive out here to get a car--Give Lori at Westchester MINI a call--914-761-5555, ask for Lori Abrams. I think she has a few prespec'ed cars un spoken for for June delivery.
