New Warning Light

A few months ago in the quest to hunt down an electrical problem my dealer installed a new instrument cluster in my 2002 Cooper. Something seemed vaguely different, but I couldn't figure it out so I thought it was just my imagination. Yesterday, a warning light went on that I'd never noticed before. "Check filler cap." It was the bottom right hand side light on the Speedo that had been a blank light in the past. To make sure that "check filler cap" didn't mean anything more serious than I didn't make the gas cap go click last time I filled the car up I dug out the owner's manual. No mention of a filler cap light, but under filler cap it said to make sure the cap was on properly or the "Service Engine Light" might come on (I remember being warned about this by the dealer). Apparently at some point recently MINI decided to remove that problem by creating a separate light for the gas cap. I hadn't seen anything about this. Tinyupgrade, but on the other hand if I'd been driving yesterday and the service engine light instead of filler cap light had gone on it would have stressed me out far more, and I'm not sure I would have remembered to check the gas cap (which I hadn't tightened properly). So, I guess I'll thank MINI, though it might have been nice if some one had told me in advance that there was a new feature when they changed the instruments.

Useful to know!

I didn't even know the check engine light would come on if you left it open!

Cool, my own little MINI news scoop! All because I'm too dim to tighten a gas cap.
