Servicing and mod query.

I am due for 1st service next month and was wondering what you folk generally do with regards small mods which can be reverted back to original stock e.g induction kit. I have read that people remove and replace with stock air filter as this is pretty staright forward to do. I suppose it also depends on how fusy ones dealer is too?? I am a little lazy and wouldn't bother to do this unless strictly necessary. What would you suggest based on your experiences?? Cheers

Some dealers don't seem fussed but to avoid any hassle it might be worth changing back. Perhaps if you post what dealer you are using someone else might post if they know the policy of that dealer is.

I've got race seats (Sparco's), K&N 57i, PlayMINI cat back exhaust, and OneClick. My dealer doesn't say anything....

My car is not due for a service for another 13500 miles, but I’d like to have mine serviced every 3-4000 miles . Would I invalidate the warranty if I took it to my local garage to have an oil change, but still have the service book stamped? The reason I would go to my local garage is they wouldn’t be fussed about the mods otherwise I would have to put back all the original parts, i.e. exhaust, pulley, intercooler etc which would take best part of a mornings to do. Obviously when the main service was due I’d go to my local BMW garage as a standard car. Just now sure how I’d stand.

If your local garage changed the oil and put on a MINI oil filter how would your local dealer know? Mind you it would be a pointless exercise and waste of expensive oil to throw it away after only 3/4k miles. What's the point in oil companies spending millions developing synthetic oils that last 20k miles only for people to revert to servicing schedules from the 1960s and old mineral based oils? Having said which there is no law against flushing pound notes down the toilet and the only problem I can see would be if you stamped your service book every time - you'd soon run out of pages and it would be confusing to future buyers as to what services had been carried out by whom.

Hi Andy,

Fair point , I've been used to owning Ford Rs models for the last 10 years where these cars were serviced every 3-4000 miles because they are turbo charged and the oil gets very hot, even with an oil cooler

dude it's worth checking with yr dealer b4 u get there, imo. Mainly just remember please that mods also affect yr tlc, if u paid for this?

For me it was no problemo... I have been upfront with my dealer about my conversion and for warranty issues this is not a problem, as long as whatever problem u have is not related to yr intake (like rear light failure is not a mod related issue)

Main thing is if you have visible mods u really have to come a bit clean as they will find out anyway.

The invisible mod that worries me is them frigging around with yr ecu upgrade - which is why I told my dealer about mine....

Just don't let them rip u off ok?

regards

Max

Cheers, Max. I am aware that my dealer (Lister Patk, Bradford) is not too in favour of modifications but may check with them first if I am to take it there. I also have the option of taking it to Scotthall, Leeds and I think they are less likely to have a problem with mods. Does anyone go to either of these 2 dealerships and what are they like???

Cooper Tunbridge Wells - I hop to J4 M25 (Orpington) and travel down. Mainly because I don't trust any of the local ones, it's a nice drive, and I've got to know the staff at Tunbridge Wells - they are top people. They even just let me 'have a go' in their JCW Cooper S even though I had no intention of buying it!!!
