Waiting times getting longer again?

I picked up my Cooper today (Absolutely fantastic), but my Dealer was telling me that because of the Italian Job coming out on DVD recently here in the UK, they now can't get anything new delivered until July! Glad I ordered in Jan. Still, for those who are waiting, it will be worth it!

Well I spoke to my dealer today too and he told me that the waiting list was going to go up because they were switching production of a lot of Cooper S (what is the plural of Cooper S?!) to the convertible and that he happened to have a cancelled order if I didn't want that long wait.

Congratulations on your new car.

Switzerland

My dealer told me the same. I ordered my MCS back in February, with promised delivery in May. Last week my dealer told me that because of the convertible production my MCS won't be here in Switzerland before June...

I only had to wait 6 weeks for my ONE that I got last Sept but I have been told 12 weeks for my Cooper I ordered 2 weeks ago. I knew it would be like this after the Italian Job came out. 10 more weeks to go

Hmmm. Just ordered my Mini last week and was told the production week would be week 17 which is the week of April 19.

What does it take to build, a week or so? How long from build to ship to shore again? I figured a few weeks.

Dealer said there was a lull in the time to production just in March but that the window was closing. Could be on a dealer by dealer basis. My dealer is Peabody, MA and they claim to be the largest in terms of volume.

According to my dealer, the actually building of your car takes around 2.5 hours!

There is a forum on delivery and shipping that should help you get an idea of how long it takes to get them across the pond.

Hang in there, it will be worth it.

They have to juggle orders for five models ( One, Diesel, Cooper, S and Convertible) in one plant, up from two or three when they started, something has to give. It's too bad they don't have any easy way to increase production a bit.

Something along the lines of:
I want to lie in the back of a MINI, drinking fresh mango juice...
and I suppose a swirly thing alert is used for curves in the road, no?
Too bad MINI killed the light green, it would have looked just like starbug.

well your dealers well wrong! It takes over 9 hours just in the spray booth! Went on a factory tour the other week - very good - an absolute must!

From what we saw it takes quite a while in the "body in White" section then as I said another 9 hours in the paint shop - maybe the final assembly takes 2 1/2 hours. It was amasing to see all the cars going along the line and being fitted up. I would actually hate to guess the total number of man hours it takes to build one MINI from scratch. A lot of things like the dash etc are built at another factory to your spec - i.e. if you have air con or vis pack etc. This is then put in the car on the line by a very clever tagging system. So thats why the final assembly is only 2 1/2 hours cause a lot is done beforehand.

Paul

I would have thought those of you in the UK would have much shorter waits due to not having the long distances to ship. I guess I ordered my car at just the right time. I ordered my MCS on April 12, 2003 and picked it up at the dealer in Palm Harbor, Florida on June 7, 2003. Following the tracking system, it was only three weeks from the time the car was built to when I took delivery. I do recall that when I picked up Spiney Norman, it was a week after The Italian Job premiered here in the States. The dealer had indicated that more people were stopping in because of seeing the cars in the movie. I guess there is an "Italian Job" effect on sales.

In the online webcast with the factory people on the MINI website, one of the managers says it takes 25 hours to get one through the plant.

"Stoke me a clipper"'s an unusual variant on "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast". I must have missed that episode.

"Do try to keep up Nigel!"
