Offline | Do you recall if the roof rack requires drilling into the roof structure? Since there aren't, or don't seem to be any provisions made for this, I was wondering who intrusive they will be in altering the roof from stock. ![]() Probably a Cooper (really want an S though) Jet black with black roof (w/ custom pearl clear coat over custom metallic-in-clear bonnet stripes)only noticable if you look real hard for the stripes... Offline | Thanks Bruce, I was afraid of that. I guess if your limited to ownership of one car though, and your life revolves around snow skiing, then that's the way it goes. I wonder if the 2003 models will come with integrated attachments to alleviate this unwanted drilling? I've been reading a lot at MINI2 lately and notice that you are often giving great feedback, thanks. I wanted to post a question to someone that is a true many fan, not that we all aren't fans, afterall we are sitting in front of our computers drooling over all the newest knowledge to be gained floating around the MINI. But nonetheless, this question is for everyone... I am not sure how to move a thread because this question probably won't belong in this thread, but I trust that the next person that answers this question will move the thread so it can get more hits. Being an American, mind you I have lived in London for 6 months and driven an old Mini-oh, the go-kart feeling, so I do have an affinity for our frieds across the pond and there Minis/MINIs, but I want to be TRUE to the idea of the Mini/MINI. So the question...because the Cooper S seems so off in the distant future for me..at least a year or two, I've been thinking about opting for the Cooper and then make performance changes. However, I don't want to undermine what it IS to be a MINI owner. Afterall the originals were what, 55bhp? These cars were never intended to be bullets, but certainly John Cooper instigated the Works to install more aspiration for those that desired it. There is a company in Portland Oregon, Germanformula, that will be working on a 260bhp AWD kit with a new 6 speed gearbox and transfer case for the Cooper. Is this absurd? Do all you folk across the water think, "this is not what the Mini/MINI is about..."? I don't know, I am an American that is used to driving a 1971 Chevy truck with 350hp. I suppose we have to make our Coopers what we want for ourselves, but I was wondering what other's thoughts were on dreaming of the Cooper///M or Cooper DINAN... Thanks for the feedback if your like me, or the complete opposite for that matter. Cheers, Eric -Eric ![]() Probably a Cooper (really want an S though) Jet black with black roof (w/ custom pearl clear coat over custom metallic-in-clear bonnet stripes)only noticable if you look real hard for the stripes... | MINI2 Regular | I think both, if the MINI is faithful to Mini traditions of value, economy, thrift, and attainability. Part of that tradition also includes extending the basic philosophy to its "absurd" extremes, if for no other reason than to see how far (and how fast) that minimalist design can go. So putting a 260 hp AWD system in a MINI is part of that heritage, too. Regardless of the configuration, the underlying traits remain the same: space efficiency, handling, and utility. There's another part of that heritage: an appreciation of just about any Mini configuration among fellow owners. Owners of highly modified Minis still look with fondness and reverence on a 1959 Mini with 10 inch wheels and its original low horsepower engine. Based on the messages I've read at MINI2, I'm betting that tradition will continue. At least I hope so, because I think my "city cruiser" will be much closer to the 1959 philosophy than some of the ones y'all are planning. ![]() If you do think putting 260 hp in a MINI is absurd, pause and reflect for a moment on the profound absurdity of the soccer mom (or dad) driving a GMC Suburban or Ford Expedition to pick up a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. I just can't figure out the fascination with trucks. I must say I'm more than a little concerned that MINI (in the U.S.) will turn into PT Cruiser Mark II. Chrysler is now starting to offer rebates on PT Cruiser, because it's now a fast fading fad. Overcharges helped make that happen because of the predictable backlash. (People who didn't have them hated the owners that did, because the owners that did "cheated.") I can't help myself. When I see a PT Cruiser -- happens frequently -- I can't help thinking, "That owner must be an idiot." This situation will be very tricky for BMW. Offline | I am still curious what our friends across the pond think... But I think you're right. We Americans need to identify with our MINIs with a respect for the past and an eye towards the future. Of course I would be disgusted if BMW redesigned it again in 3-7 years. Sure there are clearly some bugs that will need be worked out, i.e. cup holders, seat mechanics, wipers...etc., but boy, this sure will be a test for BMW. Could you expand on your philosophy regarding opting for the Coooper and not the S? Why are you opting for the CVT rather than the Manual transmission? One of my thoughts regarding getting a Cooper instead of a Cooper S was the desire to have a 2002 model rather than later. I read earlier today in a thread that the cars one year after a release date tend to hold their value better. Do you think this will be the case for the MINI? I was thinking it would be more desirable to have the 2002 models. Thanks for the feedback. -Eric ![]() Probably a Cooper (really want an S though) Jet black with black roof (w/ custom pearl clear coat over custom metallic-in-clear bonnet stripes)only noticable if you look real hard for the stripes... | MINI2 Regular | Why the Cooper and not the S? Well, availability of the CVT, for one thing. (See below.) I also think the Cooper has a more classic, cleaner appearance. (Not a criticism of the Cooper S, by the way.) Like the original Mini, the MINI Cooper achieves the maximum with just the minimum. Something Zen about that. ![]() Why the CVT? In part for the same reason as 1959's transversally mounted engine. It suits the mission in a modern way. My mission is to cope with Chicago traffic, some of the worst in the entire U.S. If I happened to live almost anywhere else in the country, I'd go for the stick shift. I'm glad BMW decided that, if they had to offer an automatic, they'd make it the best they possibly could. The CVT is a great idea. I agree that BMW ought not change what works. Judging from the rest of their product line, they seem to understand that concept. While it'll be near impossible to beat the Mini's 40+ year run, hopefully MINI will stand the test of time. Offline | I like your MINI attitude, Tim. Our cars will be so much alike but they can become oh so different. Part of the appeal of the Miata is what the car does and part of the allure is what we do to our cars. The diversity that we will see at future Mini/MINI meets will be captivating. Seeing what someone else has done or not done to their car is fun and it brings very different kinds of people together, each enjoying the meeting in different ways. I love to go to a major Miata event and see the powerbrokers and the beauty queens, the modifiers and the stockers, the autocrossers and the concourse guys, the funcana fans and the road rally rats....get the picture. We all love the Miata and we all have fun. I think owning and playing with my MINI will seriously cut into Miata time, and I hope it will provide the same kinds of fun. I expect there will be a slightly younger crowd with the MINI and I look forward to the interesting things we will do with our toys/transportation vehicles.![]() The whole world is buzzing about the MINI! 2002 MINI Cooper black w/yellow stripes 2000 Miata Evolution Orange EO2K project car 1996 XJ6 |

| MINI2 Master | On the note of the original thread (whatever that was) could you or someone else in the US scan the new accessory brochure. I think they're gonna get a lot of money from me. I want wheel locks, rubber floor mats all around, Boot box (if it's like those sealer weathertech ones you can spill stuff in), Boot net, Licence plate frames, sunshade. Assuming of course that they're all emblazoned with the MINI logo, and a perfect fit. I'm sure it's yes on both points. Hell, I might even buy a MINI T-Shirt. What is happening to me? I didn't buy any of this crap for our Pontiac or Acura. Chilli Red/White Cooper S, Sport Pack & Sunroof. Delivered June 12th, 2002!Now with MCS Winter Tire Package. |

Offline | Makes perfect sense, Timothy. I can't wait to get my MINI and meet all the new MINI owners. The diversity's going to be, well, crazy. A car that has been loved by so many, so many ages and now it is shot into the 21st century with the chance to again rekindle the flame that was extinguished in America 30 years ago. A few years ago when I lived in London, I seriously considered shipping a Mini across the pond to America cause I wanted one so bad. Now I can finally have one, right here at home. The wait is becoming painful...but well worth, I know. | MINI2 Senior | Bruce: First, thanks for connecting these links up and noting the source. I'm hoping to have a MINI Accessories Catalog to scan in about a week (assuming my dealer comes through).About the R90 wheels, in talking with the parts department at my dealer, the Full Set includes the cost of tires. Although they were unsure which tires would come with the Full Set or if you'd be able to specify All Season or Performance, once the June/July builds begin. One more thing: If you look at wheel type R85, those appear to be the S-Lites. They sell for $225 in the catalog. I'm curious if anyone has been able to arrainge a wheel credit. So that if you got the R90's at $385, maybe you could get the $225 credit for the S-lites (or at least part of that $225 credited towards the wheels). |

Offline | Many thanks for the link to the accessories brochure. It shows 9 different wheels and the regular MINI brochure has 5 (15" 7-hole, 15" 8-spoke, 16" 5-star, 16" V-spoke, 17" S-Lite). I know the 17" R90 is one of the other 4. What are the other 3 wheels? What do they cost?
