The M2...Forget the 1-series

The May '04 issue of Automobile Mag has a cover story (sneak preview) on the upcoming BMW M2, and it looks pretty hot. The article starts off "Nestled between drivers who enjoy the function and affordability of the MINI Cooper and those who can afford to function with a 3-series is that slim, yet apparently underserved segement of the car-buying public labeled "the upper end of the lower midrange segment.""

As we've heard, the 1-series probably won't come to the USA, but the 2-series will. The M2 looks like a screamer. I found the styling to be a cross between the Z-4 (where a b-pillar would be, towards the front) and an Acura RSX back end.

There will also be a Z2 roadster, and the M2, prices start in the low to mid $20,000 and go up to the low $30,000s for the M2.

They think a 300HP 3.0 liter six would be in the M2 & Z2. Trannies include 5 & 6 speed gearboxes, 5-speed auto, & ultraquick 6-speed sequential manual gearbox w/ paddle shift actuation.

One key differentiator 'tween the MINI & M2 is that the M2 won't have Active Steering, Dynamic Drive Control, Electronic Damping Control, and xDrive/4WD.

Still, it looks like it will be a pretty hot car.

Sure is, plus w/ all those horses, I would imagine it would difficult to control for newbies without any electronic assistance.

I doubt very much that it'll be that cheap
A 300bhp M2 will be outperforming a 2.5 Z3 (even 3.0 coming to think of it) so I'd guess they'd be very comparible in price, maybe slightly cheaper, but no way in the $30k range

I'd love to be proved wrong though

MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime
