Offline | Would you have bought this RX-8 instead of your Mini? I love my 2004 MCS with 10,000 troublefree miles, but if this deal was around when I purchased my Cooper S I would have been very, very tempted. Found this ad in the local paper here is So Cal on Saturday. I just love that new Renesis Rotary powerplant. Smoooooooooooth....... |

Offline | They are nice cars no doubt and my friend is thinking of getting one so I went with him on his test drive the other week. We went out in the 230bhp version. The first thing I noticed was how low the car was, giving it a real sporty feel. He didn't drive it too hard coz the salesman was moaning about the amount of people that just want a drive it and are not actually interested in buying it. It felt very different to my MCS. I know its a faster car if you drive it hard, but the lack of torque was more noticable in the RX-8 than any other car I have been in. Like when he powered out of a roundabout it didn't seem to have the urgency of a MCS. The engine does sound very nice, kinda like a powerful motorbike. |

Offline | No. I just don't like it at all. People rave about the rotary engine and the suicide doors but for me they are both negative points. The engine needs revving a ridiculous amount to get any power out of it and has no torque at the lower end. The suicide doors mean that the front doors are small, like on a four door car. I like nice wide doors like on a coupe or 3dr. Then there's the price, it is 50% more expensive than the MCS in the UK. And of course that's not taking into account the petrol. Oh sure, doing a small amount of revs it might get the claimed 24 mpg but the engine needs revving hard and you don't get anywhere near that. Considering I get 25mpg out of my One I'd probably get about 10 out of the RX-8, the power does peak at 8200 rpm afterall. And remember petrol in the UK is about $7 per gallon. Sorry to go off on a rant but a lot of friends are considering defecting to the RX-8 and it's starting to annoy me. I don't think any of them bothered after they test drove it though. ![]() |

Offline | Troublefree is not what I'd call an RX-8. As someone who owns an RX-7, mazda still needs to figure out some issues with getting a reliable rotary on the road. Engines have been failing on the RX-8's, and while the car is cool, I'd very much wait a few years to get one (or maybe they'll make an RX-7 with some torque and ditch the back seats) once they've sorted out the issues that were created with the Renesis engine. There's discussion about the rx-8 in several places, try searching for it, its a common comparison car, though I don't think anyone has actually traded in a MINI for one. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

| Ride The Dragon! | Nah. It's like when I decided to actually buy a MINI, my brother wanted me to test drive a whole heapin' helpin' of other cars first (inc. an RX-8). I simply wasn't interested. For me, a MINI is in a class by itself, and I really can't compare it to other cars. It's kinda like you're buying into a whole lifestyle, not just a car! ![]() |

| Now With More Cowbell | Not my bucket of blood if I'm to only have one car. The four door thing is pretty much irrelevant to me (In the 17 months I've owned a MINI I've had precisely two occasions to use the back seat for passengers) and I've had my fair share of torqueless but super-revvy motors already (Hondas though, not Mazda rotaries). Still, it's make a fun second car.... -CW Global Moderator |

| Slippery When Wet | New RX-8 in the family... I agree! My mom just sold her 2001 Jetta for a new RX-8 that looks just like this one... http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/MazdaRX8/Photos.htm Its a beautiful car and a ton of fun to drive but I wouldn't want one in lieu of a MINI. If I set out to buy a MINI and ended up with an RX-8 I can't imagine I would be satisfied... I just don't think they can be compared. My mom adores my MINI but the RX-8 suits her more.-Stef back in action |

Offline | At one point in time, I was seriously considering buying the RX-8. I think it drives fantastic, and love the Rotory engine, but if you go to some of the RX-8 forums, you'll find that almost everyone has some sort of major problem with their car. The engine floods, thereby prohibiting starting the engine, the engine failed in some cars, etc. When some people called the RX-8 the ford of cars, I decided it wasn't a good idea to buy that. And frankly, I don't regret it either! Many people on the RX-8 forums were dejected that no one looked at their cars anymore, well we'll never have to worry about that in our MINIs! ![]() |

Offline | Me too, ditto 58,59 60 or 62 Corvette. There aren't too many available and the nice ones are very expensive. But there're terrific. Owned a 67 Corvette convertible back in 68.....great car. Robert Stancliff Sr. |

Offline | Me three, 58, 9 or 60 Corvette would be great. But then I've got the 88 sitting in the garage while I'm blasting around in the MCS. As for the Mazda, no way. It's just another asian wanna be. No real passion. |
