| M5 Extraordinare! | Land Rover Remote Key works with MINI? Anyone know if the Land Rover Discovery Key works with the MINI? I first noticed that they looked exactly the same when I saw my friends key and I was like thats EXACTLY how my MINI key looks. But ya anyways... anyone know if they can be programmed to work (* lock and unlock*) the MINI? They are both made by Valeo and the back FCC and CAN numbers are the same... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46101&item=2481129 241&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW Wonder why BMW made the MINI key the same as the Land Rover key... is it because BMW had too many extra spare keys laying around before selling Land Rover to Ford that they didnt want to waste it and so they used it for MINI... and now that they finally ran the stocks down they are changing it back to the BMW supplier hence the new 2005 MINI key looks like the BMW key. hahaha just a thought. ![]() |

Offline | I think the rational of why the MINI key looks so much like a Rover (not Land Rover specifically, remember Rover made actual cars in the UK not just SUVs) is because Rover did most of the design of the MINI, BMW only got involved at the last steps, so why would they bother changing the ignition system when they got involved. Of course now that its '05 and its a BMW only redesign, they're incorporating BMW standard stuff, like the new key. As far as if you can program it, I'd think yes, but that's just a guess totally, since the key part looks totally different (more like a 'normal' key and not the reverse key of a MINI) it could go either way. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

| Tinkering In The Garage | simple answer is that the Discovery and MINI are made by companies that were or are owned by BMW. It make sense to source parts from the same supplier to save cost, but sadly i have no idea if the disco key will work and as it looks the same as a MINI on why would you want it to? Ady ![]() |

Offline | The MINI key is identical to the Rover 75 key. I found this out when a friend and I picked up each other's keys before going out to the car park. Much puzzlement followed with each of us unlocking the other's car but finding we were unable to start the one we were sat in. To be fair it doesn't take much to confuse me. Offline | My Rover 75 and my wife's MINI have very similar keys, made by Valeo. The radio signals are very similar, as if I operate both keys at the same time, neither car responds. Also, the MINI takes about 100mA from its battery as the Rover 75 key is pressed. I think that there is some computer working out that it's the wrong key that takes the current. As all cars in Europe have to use the 433 MHz band, interference like that is likely even if the keys look different. |

Offline | Since our other car is a Land Rover...confusion sometimes reins when I grab the wrong set At least I don't have to remember how two different key systems work...newfangled technogy ![]() ![]() |

Offline | Well, yes, actually. I've had the battery run down a couple of times, and I was trying to find if it was a dead battery, the car as supplied or the extras that I had added. And it's an ammeter not a voltmeter! |

| M5 Extraordinare! | Ya! isnt that what i said? LOL Oh guess not... must have thought and typed different things SO SO SO... that means if i sit there long enough or have enough Land Rover keys I can drain your battery w/out touching your car Either that or confuse the heck out of it with like 300 Land Rover keys all pushed at once. ![]() |
