There's another 05 supply shortage, if you didn't already know!

There might be some major delays in early 05 production according to www.motoringfile.com but I don't see why they can't just make up the shortage by boosting production of CVT MC's and MCS's in the meantime.

quote from motoringfile:

"According to one of our more frequent "in the know" contributors we may be seeing shortage effecting early 2005 model year production:

It looks like supplies of the new Getrag 5-speed may be in short supply over in Oxford. We were one of the top 10 dealers in the country last year, so our allocations have been pretty big (we got almost 40 Coopers for June production), but we were only allocated 5 Coopers for July (first run of \'05\'s) and 0! for August.

Of course we only got 12 MCS's for August production and 5 each of the convertibles, so things are tight all over.

Get ready for long lines at the dealers again! (If you're not already experiencing them.)"

Whoa.

It is to be expected I guess, with the inclusion of new models, variants etc...

Glad I got mine when I did I think.

Good luck to all joining the queue!

I don't understand why they can't just make more 05 CVT MC's and MCS's to fill the factory floor until more 5-speed getrags come in, unless there are other issues involved that I don't understand.

i think the rumors are the result of certain high volume dealerships receiving way less than normal allocations for the next couple months...

With that coming from someone who knows, that's nice to know. If you know what I mean.

Goonery, Thanks for clearing that up
Hope things are going well

Do you know if the new 3 spoke steering wheel is standard on UK cars for 05 production? Or is it still an option?
Cheers

Cheeky
Is the 3 spoke standard equipment across the range from 05 production?

I had to think carefully there

Tell me about it! The original posts quotes came from someone at a very big dealer in the US (corroborated by several other people at MINI dealers) who generally is on top of all such things. Odd though that several US dealerships seem to be getting seemingly very low allotments on the Cooper over the next two months.

To be fair with people posting on here about the dates for their cars delivery suddenly slipping (have seen this about both a Cab and a Cooper) you can understand why people are jumpy. Just hope mine due the end of July doesn't suddenly shift...

The only thing i can add, which may or may not be useful
When recently ordering my new mini for september delivery my local dealer said he expected waiting times to climb again. His reasoning was the factory would be focusing on getting a good voloume of cabrio's made to get some out on the road and fulfil the current backlodge of orders. Made sense to me at the time

...And that dealers in the western US (outside of CA) are getting larger allocations to try and cut back on the huge wait times and get folks their cars they've been waiting 6-12-18 mos to order. Finally. Jimbo

Motoringfile.com just updated the reason forproduction delay and its because of the huge demand for the convertibles thats taking up 30% of production in conjunction with switching over to the new 05's which is causing big delays in hatchack production.

I don't blame Mini for making the most convertibles they can since they have to be way more profitable at a $4,500 premium over the equivalent hardtop.

quote from motoringfile.com:

"Update: We've got word from a source on the other side of the pond on the real issues at play here:

The normal allocations are lower for 'stock' vehicles due to the change from 04 to 05 spec and the introduction of Cabrio, which effectively soaks up 30% of what would have been pure hatchback cars. Demand for Cabrio has gone ballistic, so something has to give, that coupled with 05 change over means that waiting times will inevitably increase for a while until things settle down again. That said 'and off the record' we're looking at ways to increase production still further."

As someone else posted, does anyone think this will affect someone (like myself ) with a MCS already scheduled for production in July?

I would email miniusa or ask your dealer what week of production you are in and see if it has changed in the last few days.

If you are sceduled for production (have a production number at least) I would NOT EXPECT it to change much - might slip a week or 2 depending on model-year change-over, but the production number was assigned after the Coupe/Roadster split was decided. I think the big thing will be fewer folks getting production numbers for a few months. Of course I have NO inside information and may be 100% blowing hot air up somebody's skirt.
