I've just joined this group having been quite suprised to find such a group for a car not yet being built! I thought I was alone in
looking forward to the new MINI.

I live in the UK (Bromsgrove) and currently have a 1 year old Ford Puma. The build quality is very poor and the amount of things going/gone wrong with it have made me want another car sometime this year.

I've decided on a MINI Cooper as soon as they are available over here (early July 2001 - lucky me). From the write-ups over here people
have been saying that in pure handling terms it's even better than the Puma (probably one of best handing cars for under £30k) and it should be built well. I can't wait for my test drive but I have yet to put a deposit down on one.

BTW does anyone have any info on the weight of the Cooper and what UK insurance band it's likely to fall under?

Best wishes to all in the group

Martin Hart

Hello!

Afraid I can't help you on the weight or insurance band, if I hear anyrthing I'll post it here first, and if someone else hears first, please do the same!

I thought the Pumas were well made by all accounts? Maybe you got a duff one. My fiance got a new Clio last March as a company car, and that's had tonnes of little problems, mostly to do with build quality.. she's kind of hoping to get a new MINI as hher next comapany car.. cool.

I am from a classic mini background, but I like the new one very much too, I expect it to get quite a following in time. I hope this site will prove useful to anyone interested, and once the car is out, become a place to share driving experiences, photographs and the like!

I hope I'm doing this right; it seems like there ought to be a spot to type into. Anyway, you must know that the weight will be around 1,600 lbs according to magazine articles. Does that help?

I think weight estimates are actually around 2500 lbs. The original Cooper S weighed in at 1400 to 1500 lbs and had 76 hp. The new one is almost two feet longer, is loaded with airbags and techno goodies and will have twice as many ponies under the hood.
