I may be slow on this, but What Car? magazine in the UK also now has a review. Haven't checked if it is online yet.

Car and What Car? are two different magazines. (Just to make things more confusing, there is a South African magazine also called "CAR")

The What Car referred to is a UK monthly car `consumer` magazine, July issue out now.

It is a `sister` magazine to the (weekly) Autocar, both published by Haymarket Motoring Publications Ltd. (Lets be clear about this, eh!)

I haven`t seen the July issue but understand the MINI got 4 stars out of 5 - not surprisingly the same as Autocar!!

The July issue of the UK monthly Car is due out next Thursday (14th) and is likely to give more of an in depth, more comprehensive MINI review offering a different `slant` with excellent photography!
BBC`s TopGear (monthly) should also offer an interesting, if jokey, review, with a test probably based around their TV programme - out either now or next week!

Those are my personal views of course. :O=

One of the best clues is that Car magazine prints "Car" and What Car? magazine prints "What Car?" on their respective covers...

I get a smattering of the UK car mags here in San Francisco (and I grew up in England, so have fond memories of Car and another short-lived mag - Fast Lane was it called?). Is it just me or is Top Gear a pretty lightweight operation - it seems like they're very flippant and boy-toy oriented. The writing quality in Car is generally excellent, and the photography is second to none. For some reason the US mags universally have crummy photography, printed in hyper saturated colors.

I agree about the writing style of Top Gear. It seems like they are a bunch of old guys who've been told to prance around with attitudes like they're still teenagers while being ****ed off at everyone and everything. This is appealing? And can we get a fund together to get Clarkson a haircut to match his age? Note to Mr. C.: The 70's are over!

Generally, I think the UK auto magazines have much better content and are much better produced than the US ones (better photography, graphics, etc.). Compare our AutoWeek with UK's Autocar or AutoExpress - all of them weekly publications. AutoWeek continues to improve, but it is a lightweight compared to the UK counterparts. I think this must be because of competition of weekly magazines in the UK that AutoWeek doesn't enjoy here.

I happen to like the photography (and writing) in Car and Driver. I think Road & Track has made some much needed recent improvements, but I find it hard to believe that adults actually produce Motor Trend. It seems, and always has seemed, to be slapped together over a weekend each month by junior high school nerds. (Did you know there is always a monthly contest internal in Motor Trend to see how many cool pseudo-acronyms like "FOMOCO" and "SOCAL" can be inserted into the so-called text?)

And Automobile magazine continues to bore - a series of name-dropping essays (yawn) by the same old columnists packaged with the usual drivel on attending the latest motoring press junkets. They can't even be bothered to independently test the cars.

I feel much better now.

I love british car magazines. Sure some of the writing my not be great, it is a hell of alot better than the crap here in north america.

For example. Magazines like motortrend, road and track and car and driver are all the same. All i ever see on these magazines are pictures of vipers and crap like that.

Also things like Ferrari 355 best convertible blah blah blah. I know americans have an obsession with muscle and stuff but can any normal person with a normal job afford any of these machines? hell no.

I bothers me to see stuff like Merc S class, best sedan. ? sure its is good but it is also 100 thousand dollars.

I have also lost count of how many covers i have seen that new thunderbird on. I swear it has been on every magazine cover for months now. What an overpriced piece of crap.

Just my opinion.

I think in the UK that CAR is the best monthly magazine so far as quality is concerned, in the writing style, and certainly in the photography.

AutoCar and Auto Express are in a particularly competitive mood at the moment, although to really get the weekly low-down on what's happening you still have to buy both (or read both in the shop and decide which one to buy (if any) then).

Casey, you`re way off the (?) mark, and way out of order with that!

And `his` has got a name!

The best US car mag IMHO is Sports Car International, but it's hard to find. I picked one up at an airport newstand a year or two ago, but don't remember ever seeing it before that (although their back issues go back many years). Alhough it's a really polished professional product, they don't even have a website!

I'm not sure if I follow what you mean here Jakx...way off? way out of order? I mistakenly took his post as a question and answered it. When corrected by others, i quickly jumped up and said oh yea and admitted my mistake.

And 'his' has got a name???

You`re right Casey . . . I too was a bit confused, but eventually cottoned-on after I`d posted!

The other bit; in England if you refer to someone as his, him, her or she etc (if they are present in the same room - and we are in the same `room` here) it`s not considered polite!

No offence Casey - if you`d referred to `Tim`s` then I wouldn`t have jumped the gun and posted anyhow! I (mistakenly) thought you were being impolite!

If I'd been offended, I would have said so.

Hopefully BMW will offer an irony filter as an optional extra too...

Please accept my apologies Tim!
(But, leave it out, the standard oil filter is supposed to deal with all the irony particles.)
