2004 Transmission vs. 2005 Getrag Transmission

If you haven't alrady seen my thread about whether I should get a manual or not, the Cooper will most likely be my first manual transmission car. Reading about the new tranny has gotten my worried. I've seen opinions that range from, "It's way better!!!," to, "Boo! Bring the old transmission back!" Hopefully some people here have test driven both and could help enlighten me. Thanks.

lol don't worry about it. The clutch isn't THAT different, and they're both fairly easy to drive according to most people.

Car is only good as the driver.

Apart from the different gear ratios, I think the main difference between the two boxes will be that the new one will probably last the cars life where as the first one probably won't!

My MINI's just over 2 years old and I'm on my second box!

I'm hoping this will fail also so they can put the new one in instead!

Hmm.... this pleases me. Sorry about your trannies, though. Sounds like the Getrag really is an improvement.

I'm interested in this also.
My 1st cooper had the old midland gears box and personally i loved it. Found it very smooth and precise. One of my main plus points when I first drove the car
My new cooper arrives fairly soon and will have the new getrag gearbox which most people say is 'stronger'.
I am going to test drive this box as soon as my dealer get their new demo so if you wait a week or 2 I'll have 1st hand experience

I know Dinger has driven both, he now has a new Cabrio.
Anyone out there with an opinion whose driven both boxes?

I've driven both and find the new one much better. Then again, I prefer the S box to the Cooper (old) box anyway. The new one is somewhere in the middle of the two.
