Offline | Rather Nice I think it looks quite nifty. When's the 1-series due out? Are there pics of it on the BMW site or anything? Didn't think BMW actually needed an answer for the Civic Type-R. Honda's just ain't in the same league style-wise. I've never understood the whole Civic vs Mini thing anyway. Seems a fatuous argument to me. Definitely the most handsome Mini Cooper driver in the Southwest (if not the world)! |

| MINI2 Master | 'BMW previewed a new small four-passenger convertible concept car yesterday which it will display at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. BMW says the CS1 Concept Car offers a glimpse of the design philosophy for a new "small" BMW in the future. The CS1 uses a traditional BMW driveline layout for optimum balance and handling: a longitudinal front engine and transmission and rear-wheel-drive. Under the hood is BMW's 115 horsepower 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine with Valvetronic valve control which is mated to BMWs new SMG Sequential Manual Gearbox that allows the driver to shifts gear quickly via paddles behind the steering wheel. The engine compartment is partly covered by flexible, heat-proof tissue and partly by fire-resistant carbon-glass fibre plastic. The flexible cover houses "cold" units and systems such as the air filters, the cooling and brake system indicated graphically on the reflecting surface. The "hot" components around the engine, for example the exhaust system, are housed beneath the carbon-glass fibre cover. The CS1 features extra-large brakes measuring 335 mm (13.2") in diameter at the front and 330 mm (13.0") at the rear, together with racing brake callipers fitted with six pistons at the front and four at the rear. The standard tires are big 215/45R-18 inch performance radials in front and 235/40R-18 inch at the rear mounted on light-alloy wheels. The CS1's interior includes BMWs new iDrive controls system. A controller in the centre console and a monitor enable the driver to operate all functions for comfort, communication, navigation, information and entertainment without having to first look for the appropriate controls and buttons. An aluminium crossbar forms the central axis in the cockpit. It is supported by two wing-like swinging arms rising up out of the centre tunnel and extending to the two sides of the cockpit at either end. The right-hand arm is flexible and, when required, provides access to the bag-like glove compartment behind. Dome-like surfaces appear to hover in space above the aluminium crossbar. Beneath this "roof" there is adequate space for the free-standing controls and instruments, the speedometer and tachometer are attached directly to the steering column. The two round instruments vary in size, borrowing a design theme already well-known from BMW motorcycles. They are surrounded by light rings reminiscent of the headlights' new look. The seat cushions, backrests and the steering wheel are finished in soft Nappa leather, while the side panels of the seat which are subject to greater loads come in soft, robust Nubuk leather.' Specifications Configuration: Standard drive (engine fitted lengthwise at the front, drive wheels at the rear) Engine: inline-four with VALVETRONIC valve control Capacity: 1,796 cc Max output: 115 bhp at 5,500 rpm Max torque: 129 lb-ft at 3,750 rpm Transmission: SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) with shift paddles on the steering wheel and gearshift lever. Offline | To be honest, and some may consider it a fatuous remark , Apart from the first picture, the rest of BMW's efforts to date are to my eyes, ummm, well, ugly.Is it me, or have BMW lost the proverbial styling plot lately ? ![]() |

Offline | It's you Basil You can forget the interior Basil because that’s not going to happen..well not for a while anyway. Exterior wise I think they have got it spot on, Classic BMW styling if you ask me. And since they are talking about a starting price of £15,000 expect sales to be huge. ![]() Global Moderator ![]() |

Offline | Probably is me. 1 series excepted, I personaly find the new 7 series ugly. The new corporate nose style and the raised boot line to my eyes is horrible. The 1 series will take sales from the MINI, no doubt about that....... cheers |

Offline | I think your saying LMB that BMW have gone back to the very early days styling wise, to maybe the 1957 BMW 507. I preferred their late 60's to 70's design, a reiteration of this design concept is posted here. What may be a 2 series in 2004. This I like. In fact I would even consider buying something like this over the MINI....... |
