United-Kingdom UK Car tax question???

Well I taxed my MCS just last month at the post office and was charged £165 for 12 months. I have just been trawling the DVLA website and found this link to a car tax calculator. Apparenlty cars registered after 1st March 2001 are taxed on emmisions, Cars registered before 1st March fall into 2 categories, over 1549cc (£165) and under 1549cc (£110).

So I plugged in my cars details and for a MINI Cooper S it said £160, £5 less than the Post office made me pay.

So I put in a normal Cooper and it shows £125 for 12 months?

What did you pay for 12 months tax?

Here's the link, have a look for yourselves (model R50 is for tin-top, R53 is for soft top)

The S has higher CO2 emisions than the standard cooper
So it is in a higher tax band
Also the facelift model has slightly higher emisions so the new cooper goes up from £125 to £145

What's the deal??

The Cooper kicks out less pollution than the Cooper S, so therefore, the Cooper is taxed less!

I know that, sorry I didn't explain myself clearly.....

I paid £165 but I according to that site I should only have paid £160.

I know it's only a fiver, but it's the principle at stake here.

How many Cooper or One owners have paid the full £165??

Yeah, I don't know were they have got £165 from?
According to the site, like you said, it says the duty is £160
Unless the prices have increased and the site hasn't been updated properly?

They've charged me for a car over 1549cc registered before 1st March 2001. When clearly from my registration (LL02) it's registered later.

So what are the legal ramifications for having the wrong excise duty on the car??

Is the car legally taxed?

Is it your responsibility to ensure you have the correct tax levy on the car - ignorance is no defence your honour

Looks like you're right. Last year I paid £160 for my MCS and £165 for my old Toyota. The latest MINI price list shows £160 for the MCS.

Guess your car has been registered incorrectly. Does it have an old style private plate? That might help to explain their incompetence.
