Front foglights in daylights legal (non-UK)?

This question is really for non-UK drivers. What is the law in your country regarding the use of front foglights. Here in the UK a fixed penalty of £30 is given to anyone using foglights when visibility is not impaired to less then 100M.

The law over here in N.Zealand seems to be that it's compulsory to use them all day every day if you are an insecure, mustachioed male who drives a garishly coulored late model Holden or Ford V8 with 20 inch rims.

Purely for safety reasons of course.

US law varies by state. In California, front fog lights are not legal for everyday use in clear conditions... But people all over this city use them and nobody seems to care about enforcing it. Maybe they just tack on a fine if they ticket you for something else and you were running them at the time...

Rear fogs aren't legal either in normal conditions. I think they're a little more strict on that one, but as I said, it varies by state.

No idea about the legality in CT. I drive with them on past cops all the time and I also don't have a front licence plate which is illegal. They never seem to care.

It'd be a giant pain to track down the laws for each state, but its pretty irrelevant anyway. Given plenty of cars (Especially Pontiacs) that have the fog light switch where it can always be on, so they either go on with the car, or go on when you turn on the lights, there's so many people who just drive with them on, its horrible.

The reason its also irrelevant, is because common sense laws, like that seatbelt use is required at least by the driver in every state, is only followed by around 70% of the driving public. With an obvious safety issue being ignored, which police regularly issue tickets for, minor things like fog lights in clear weather aren't really looked at. Just how things work on this side of the pond I guess....

How did Bridgestone become involved in the campaign, and what were the arguments that persuaded the Govt to change the laws to allow daytime use. Was it basically to use foglights as daytime running lights because few vehicles had DRLs fitted?

survey held by government or special company(I cann't remember clearly, sorry)that daytime running lights(fogs or headlights) decrease 3% of accidents, increasing the visibility of cars on the roads.

For Bridgestone it was free(costless)way to advertise their brand on radio,tv etc. and also by supporting the campaign they tried to say how they concerned about human life..."+ credit"for consumers.

I never knew it's actually illegal. I'm pretty sure here in Detroit that it is fully legal.

Me neither, never know that it is illegal to switch on the foglight/headlight in the sunny day time, although I never do that. So, what is the problem it is so serious that the government needs to make a law to prohibit people from switching on the foglight in the day time?

I don't think that dipped headlights are illegal in daytime anywhere. Volvo drivers would be in deep trouble.

On the other hand, there have been some very strange laws, which don't seem to have be enacted to solve any problem. In England, having a bicycle light brighter than 2.4 W (if halogen) was illegal.

Overbright bicycle lights has never been a problem. No one was ever prosecuted for it.

All the law did was stop manufacturers offering good bicycle lights.

I could put a airplane headlight on my car and leave it on all day and there would not be a problem with the authorities.
