Offline | Do people in Europe Name their cars? Here on an American Mini discussion board, we are having a slight argument over the practice of Naming automobiles, you know, like cats or something. I feel that the practice is ridiculous, but am drawing some flack over my attitude. Do people in civilized countries do this? I look at the signatures on the Mini2 board and don't see car names, like Pooky or Poco, or Ralph or anything. Would a self-respecting Englishman say something like, "I'm John Tushingham and this is my Mini, Grizelda." Is this sort of cloying anthropomorphism tolerated on the continent? |

Offline | Joe, not only MINI drivers but lots of drivers name their cars. I belong to a few British car clubs and just about everyone has a whimsical name for their car. Even the most macho gearhead guys do it. I was reluctant to name mine, too, but peer pressure forced me to do it. Makes it more fun, I guess. |

Offline | When I was younger, people named their cars, but it was always something like "The Blue Bomb," or "The Wreck," or my wife's rusted out Pinto that she called "The Rustabout." This makes sense to me, since it describes the nature of the vehicle. But what does a name like "Shirley" mean? This is purely a psychological exercise for the owner seeking a relationship with an inanimate object. I say get a dog, or a mate, or children, or anything that can actually respond to you outside of your fantasy world. Call your car "the gas guzzler," or "Budget Breaker." What's next - cars called "Mom?" |
