Door numbers and the Law.

I have noticed on a few racing cars that they have black crosses over the racing numbers on their doors. I have also seen a few "ordinary" MINIs with large numbers on their doors that are not really racing numbers, but are psuedo racing style numbers. These cars numbers do not have the black tape crosses over them.

It has been suggested that the racing cars have to have the black crosses fixed on their numbers as a legal requirement for road use in the UK. Can anyone explain the law on this subject, and what law might the "ordinary" MINIs be breaking in respect of sporting door numbers?

I have door numbers on my "ordinary" MINI and have not been stopped in over 6000 miles with them fitted. Am I breaking the law if I do not fix an absurd black cross over the top of them?

Yeah, as I understand it you can't have numbers on your doors. (if you do they must be crossed out)

I'm not sure whether this is for insurance reasons or to avoid breaking the law.

the MINI has gone...

I mentioned this when I was on the Peaks Run as the Pepper White Cooper had '02' on the door. So far as I knew it is the law, and that's why you see some cars with a blank box on the doors where the number would normally be. Not sure why though

Surely you only break the law if you get caught...if you dont, you are safe.

I don't think it's against UK motoring law to have race numbers on the side of our car. I think it's a regulation/rule of the Motor Sport Association to discourage people from "racing" on public roads. If you don't comply you get your race licence withheld/endorsed and you can't race on UK tracks/circuits.

Maybe one of our resident JCW Club Sport Competitors has read the rules and can advise. (Read the rulebook - unlikely! )
