Deliberate damage - respray cost

Those of you who read my post about some nice person putting a two foot ket scratch on my passenger door may be interested in the cost of repair. The dealer(Scott Hall, Leeds), has quoted £150 + vat to strip the trim etc (no masking tape lines) and do full respray "like new" of the door. This is for velvet red, which, they say, can be matched well. Apparently, had it been silver, they would have to do the entire offside of the car. I don't know what anyone elses experiences are, but that seems a decent price if it's done right. They were told I was paying myself, rather than insurance, of course.

That seems like a good price considering it's a whole door... can't see why silver would change matters though?

Silver is one of the most difficult colours to match if you look around at cars that have been damaged and resprayed in silver they very rarely match so you have to blend it in a much larger area i.e. one whole side. Silver is the easiest colour to notice a respray on and you really need to get it done properly. Red and white are generally easier to match. Off course you would need to respray the whole car if you owned something like a TVR or Nissan Micra which is multi coloured!

You've got me worried, I've ordered a Silver Mini One.

Anyone in the trade on here who can give info/reasons why silver is more difficult to match.

I thought that in general metallics were hard to match and that you needed a decent bodyshop to do the work.

Don't let it put-off just go to a good body shop. My dad has a paint shop at work that can mix the paint to a factory standard - these places cost a bomb. The problem with silver is that even from factory most silvers vary take VW Polo's there are probably 5 or 6 variation's just from the factory. A good body shop will have the exact code for the exact spray of your car but you would have to expect that even small body damage might mean the complete respray into a back door and other panels to ensure consistent match.

Go with the silver. The bonuses outway the negatives!
Cant see the scratches when its been cleaned, can't see stone chips as easy because they don't show as much and it never looks that dirty!!

On my replacement MINI order I have seriously considered all the colours availiable, having a second bite at the cherry so to speak, but I still think it is the classiest colour for the MINI! But I am biased!
