Mini Wows - Parts Recommendations?

Hi all,

My sister has a 51 plate One with 32k on the clock. Its just been into the dealer where it was diagnosed with a faulty passenger side window motor (£180) and in need of 'new brakes', which at close to a £300 quote must mean discs and pads. I haven't had a look yet but I am sure the latter is tosh...

Assuming its not, I of course will not allow her to pay dealer prices for items like that so can you forum peeps let me know the best sources for bits to solve this issues? Brakes obviously won't cost £300, so what would you recommend? I am concerned about the door module - are we stuck paying BMW prices? Any input on non franchise servicing (its out of warranty), parts suppliers or other info much appreciated.

Parts !

Hi, just my opinion but i think that even though the warranty has run out, the window motor should last longer than that ! I think all goods these days should be "fit for there purpose" and a motor should last longer, check with your local Citizens Advice Bureau. With regards to the brakes, depending how hard she drives it, stick with stock parts and fit them yourself and svae a fortune, regards Damian.

Amen to DJC's advise.....I am also pretty sure the window (if you MUST pay for it) will only be available through BMW.......

Cheers guys. However surely BMW will tjust tell me to get lost? The car is not under warranty anymore so why would the pay for something thats faulty regardless of whether or not its unreasonable for it to fail in such a short time?

Also dealer claims warrranty is over but it needs no MOT until September. If Minis have a 3 year warranty how is that possible?

IF you are persistent, pugnacious, use the government's assistance to press your case (or threaten to) they might, just might, excersize the discretion they have to handle special cases. Not on the brakes mind you, on the window motor......it is a matter of who feels the cost is not worth the hassle FIRST.....you or the dealer/BMW.

IIRC, the MINI warranty is three years. Made up of a two year "Manufacturer's Warranty" and a one year "Dealer Warranty".

Check when the car was first registered......if it's September 2001 (when the 51 plate first came out) then it will have needed an MOT in September 2004.......hence it will be out of the warranty period.

Remember the 51 plate lasted until 28/2/02.....hence check the registration date, as it may still be in warranty, depending upon the date of registration.......

That said, if it needs a new MOT in September, then my second paragraph will hold true!

Hope this helps...

Robert

my dad had a £600 pound bill from BMW for four new pads and discs on his 5-series.

however he bought the lot for £150 from german and swedish (dont know if u can source mini parts here) and fitted them himself. remember they charge a fortune for labour so most of that cost will be labour rather than parts
