My first service was at around 7000 miles but I had had the car for around 15 months by this time and done predominantly short journeys and I had wanted it serviced after a year because of this. I don't think the service light is a gauge of how hard the car has been driven, more the type of journeys it is doing.

My baby was just a year old when she needed her first service at not quite 8,000 miles. I too was worried that I was driving it too hard etc but it would seem that short journies and traffic etc help lower the service intervals. So fear not, it's just nice to know that your Mini knows when it needs a little bit of TLC and can tell us and remember it's different for every car! They are just like us humans really.....very individual

I read somewhere that the calculation by the engine management system of when your service is due is based on the average fuel consumption. Therefore if you drive mainly short journeys or do a lot of town driving you will consume more fuel and the service indicator will indicate a service is required at a lower mileage. My Cooper needed it's first service at 9,000 miles, most of my mileage is to and from work and I spend the last 5 miles of my 14 mile journey queuing in traffic. I normally get around 28 MPG traveling to and from work.

The first service on my MINI One was done at 9,800 miles, I used to use that for mainly short journeys too. Wouldn't worry, current Cooper is almost at 6,000 miles and the service countdown is still showing almost 6,000 miles. I do much longer drives in this one! G

Taking it to 7,500 revs is extreme, and I would never do that... but once every other day or so, I will take my (supercharged) S to before the redline. Not taking it above 3,000 revs can only be bad... you need to stretch the car, work through the gears and get everything running nicely. This is why people say avoid buying a car that has only been owned by a grannie... as it will not have been driven properly! ![]() Of course wait until your car has been on and driven for 10 minutes (under 10k revs), and then stretch the legs a bit. I never drive my car for journeys less than 15 minutes total drive; if they are, I make sure I go the long way... I've always thought that this will prolong the life of my lovely MINI
