I am wondering if it is possible to watch my MINI being made in the factory? Will I get specific enough information to know which day to show up? Can the factory tell me? I think it would be neat to watch my Cooper S being born, but I understand if it isn't possible.
When i ordered my MINI in November my dealer told me that I could actually watch mine being built. With all I was told, I understood that eventually I would be advised of the build date etc. Well what i did not know then that I know now is that the MINI tracking info in the owner's lounge is days behind. Once it posted that my MINI was scheduled for production I later found out that it had already been built. So I don't know how you would know in time to actually watch it. Perhaps calling askmini is better but I doubt it. Maybe you will get lucky and will know the build date before it is actually built. But I seriously doubt you will ever be able to nail it down to the hour of the day.
If you mean, can you actually see it if you are in the factory at the time it is being built - probably unlikely. I went on the factory tour the week my Mini was supposed to be being built - but it turned out it had been built about 3 weeks early. The chaps doing the tour were really friendly and I think if you had a chassis no. they may have tried to find out if they could find the car - but there are LOADS of minis being built! The tour is really excellent tho - definately worth doing if you get the chance :-)
We actually got to see a small production video of our 05 MCS being built (it was a test program done by MINI back on November 9th, 2004). It's an awesome "new" feature for the Owner's Lounge (still in the testing phase) and I think that MINI should really make it a reality so that everyone can enjoy it. I took some screen shots so that folks could see what the video looks like. If you'd like to see it, then you can do so here:
