Two way radios, please advise me.

I've been on several MINI club runs and have been able to borrow a two way radio for several of them. I would now like to go out and buy a pair for myself.

The only problem is that the quality and power of them vaires so much that some of them are useless! Please could people recommend the best ones to get and where the best places are to buy them? All I'm looking for is the longest range and the best sound quality. I'm assuming that they will be compatible with everyone else's radios as well.

Any PMR will have a maximum range of 3km, and once terrain comes into the equation, the range will be somewhat reduced.

I bought a couple of cobra's and they work very well,the only problem is too many ting beeps when being notifyed by the other party....
