How to hardwire a detector?

Hi,

I want to avoid using the cig liter. I have a red and white wire. Do I connect the red to the 15 amp lighter fuse and the white to ground? Do I still need to use the fuse inline?

Thanks,

Red to +ve sounds right. You should have an inline fuse as the 15A fuse for the cigar lighter is too much and if the detector shorts the wire will get very hot before the fuse goes. You only need about 1A to run a detector so a 1 - 3 A fuse should be fine.

The mini cigar lighter turns off (mine doesn't any more, 'cos I changed it) when you turn off the ignition, which is probably what you want.

Hey pin--I have instructions on the right way to wire it in to the fuse box:

If you search the forums you will also find many others discussing how they did theirs, many tapping the power for the visor light or clock.
