Engine sizes in UK

I remember back not so long ago, maybe in the 1980's while I was growing up, most family cars were 1600cc. Those of us who had friends who were a bit wealthy might have had an 1800 or even a 2000cc

Nowadays though, people don't really seem happy with anything less than a 2.0L and almost every car manufacturer runs some monstrous engines.

Is this the truth, or have I imagined it?

Back in the 70s the most popular engine size was 1300cc. As cars have got heavier with more safety equipment and accessories manufacturers have had to fit more powerful engines to compensate. At one time a 115bhp 1.6L engine would have been classed as a very sporty output - now it is barely adequate due to the weight of the car.

Smart Roadster? I was looking at one of those when I was considering the MINI, nice looking car. I never got round to a test drive, but it looks like fun though.

It's all about torque. Once you have a car at a particular power level then you don't want to make the retro step and downsize power/torque wise.

Even a 1.6 Cooper can easily get outdragged by a 1.8 Mondeo.

There is just one moon and one golden sun; And a smile mean friendship to ev'ryone; Through the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide; It's a small world after all.

Another thing to consider is that we are all more wealthy than 30 years ago, and the motor industry, no different than any other, sees itself in a position to help us dispose of our extra disposable income.

Did anyone see that on 5th gear about deisel myths.

A Mondeo deisel would save less than £200 a year over its petrol equivalant and take 100,000
miles to pay for itself

On the engine size thing I remember a big break through years ago the nova 1.5td it was the smallest turbo deisel and it was cack.
