When I had my previous car serviced and tweaked at Autodelta, I was told categorically NEVER use supermarket petrol (except in emergency) in a performance engine.
There are little or no additives to help keep internal parts clean.
Its the same with oil. Old 20/50 oil is perfectly good enough but is 10-20 year old technology so is ok for older cars.
If one uses more modern oils for example in older cars, I bet you will find oil leaks that you did not know existed.
I once did a job at a company in deepest Derbyshire, and they produced 75% of the additives for the world market, E**o, F**d to name but 2.
They would test out additives on engines hooked up to dynos and run them for many hours.
In the 'Cabinet of Horrors' were part of engines on display after running various tests. Pistons were a good example. The crud on the top of the pistons on some engines run without significant additives was incredible.
So, to sum up, there is nothing wrong with supermarket petrol if used in the shopping car, its old technology and that is why its CHEAP.
anybody tried it instead of optimax yet?????? seemed to give me car a bit more of a growl but i chickened out and started usin optimax again. after seeing thprice thread considering changing back. anyone know if this stuff will damage my baby?
Tescos in Blandford have it now, used it on a long run to Wales the other week, improved MPG.
Filled up yesterday and it was only 2p more than normal Unleaded It was 4p the other day At that difference, less than £1 difference on a full tank, with extra mileage. It probably works out cheaper than running normal unleaded
A friend told me today that Sainsburys super unleaded is only 2p more than the standard.
I normally use Ultimate but I'm not fanatical about it. I believe that the detergents in the
better petrols are not need every tank full. If I see any of this Tesco petrol at a reasonable
price I'll mix it every other refill with Ultimate. My local Tesco's doesn't have petrol of any
sort .
Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs
So the price difference is nothing to do with supermarket garages, being able to spread the cost where as the independant retailer cannot
Or they use the same oil refineries and delivery trucks
I have seen a delivery truck go to Safeway then go across the roundabout and do a delivery to a BP Garage.
I dare say BP Ultimate and Optimax are probably branded individually but the rest is probably all the same.
This not new the UK is just catching up, I used to work in Germany and every petrol station used to have 3 levels of Unleaded.
93 Ron, 95 Ron & 97 Ron and depending what you were goint to do if it was tootle round town then you could use 93, for long motorway journey's 97 Ron, gave you better performance and mileage. This was about 10 years ago as well.
