The conclusion you’d have to draw is that a high performance car will experience less improvement using Tesco 99 as it's more likely to be running on a higher octane fuel anyway. But all modern cars with an anti-knock sensor and electronic ignition management should be able to benefit from it, according to Owens, not least because it also contains engine cleaning agents similar to those in Optimax.

So if your car needs high octane fuel, your wallet could benefit from using 99 too.

Considering Fifth Gear last night had a test comparing Optimax, BP Ultimate and normal Supermarket fuel, that doesnt hold true.

The economy car had no improvement from the better fuel at all. However the more powerful cars had a much better improvement. Optimax wiped the floor with BP ultimate, AND its cheaper!

I used a 3/4 tank this week and got 250 odd miles out of it, and i was driving fairly hard. cant say i notice any clear cut difference in performance, but im going to keep using it as its supposed to keep the engine clean and the fumes are cleaner. its only 6 pence more a litre than normal unleaded aswell, 89p and tesco in lakeside. ultimates 99p aint it?

Why do people waste money on optimax when you can get normal unleaded cheaper.
It said on 5th gear optimax and the others only improve bhp on sports cars

I think one of the biggest improvements from using Optimax is on turbocharged cars such as the Scoobydoo Impreza and Mitsubishi Evos. A lot of cars like this run at a much lower power level with lower octane fuels. The MINIs power level isn't much greater than most mid-range saloons (150bhpish).

When I used Optimax in my old MINI I found that there was less black soot build up on the tail pipe and the car definitely ran more smoothly and was more responsive.

On my Volvo V70 I find a definite improvement with Optimax. The turbo seems to run at a higher boost than with normal octane fuel.

I put some in yesterday after I was passing Winchester Tesco with Gordon. 91.9p but had a 5p coupon, which still made it cheaper than our Tesco filling station which is still 88.9p for normal.

I cant say I have noticed anything, but Im sure I will over the course of a tank...

But I need somewhere local to fill up with it!

I have a cooper and depending on how the bank is i swap between Esso's Premium 95 Ron and Optimax, I can tell slight differences, but you realy do have to think about it if you now what I mean. 5th Gear only showed you the power output level's, they missed the how clean it comes out at the back, nor did they do any test's on weather it definatly cleans your engine. I buy Optimax maybe 2 times a month and anything over i fill up with Esso, reason for buying Optimax is to make sure I am using the best (Available) petrol to help maintain (Keep Clean, running properley) of my Mini. From what I have read and hopefully understand to be right, is that unleaded either has no or very little cleaning agents, compared to your more expensive fuels like Optimax, Ultimate. As for Tesco's 99 ron fuel's I dont now if they contain these cleaning agents or not.

If Tesco's fuel doesn't have the same or better cleaning agents it maybe that I fill up with tesco's fuels more often, and use Optimax less maybe once a month.

I think this discussion is mainly about people driving the S/Works MINI.

In which case these high RON fuels are well worth it.

I put Optimax in my MC. Everyone gets to know their car and I personally feel the car to be smoother and a little more torquey with Optimax. I don't waste my time with over charged BP Ultimate.
