I will be picking up my new MCS in less than 48 hours and can't seem to find much on the costs of the extended warranty 5yrs/100,000 miles and the extended maintenance warranty. I don't want to get to the dealer and get pressured into making the wrong choice and paying too much for either one of them. Do I need both? I drive a lot of miles each year and the 3/35,000 will run out on me in a year. I also live over 4 hours from the dealer. I was told that at 45,000 miles the scheduled maintenance costs $1,300. and an extended maintenance warranty would cover that. Does anyone know? Thanks for all you help.
The extended warranties will vary in length and more importantly QUALITY. Normally they are not a BMW product but rather some other company. You can expect to pay from 1200 to 1600 USD for the extension up to seven years. Warranties DO NOT cover maintenance items, so make sure you fully understand what you are buying.
Hope this helps.
It is good value, except when like moi, you leave the country......
...extended warranty is a great idea. Paying upwards of $1800 for it would not be unusual. Depends on many factors... location (ie. rural/urban, weather/road characteristics, types and quality of fuels, labor rates, parts costs, etc...) being the most prevalent.
The maintenance warranty is also a superb idea. I do not know how much they cost because I was not offered one here... hmmm, something to ask about tomorrow. Location also impacts the cost of this type of warranty..of this I am fairly certain.
You could self-insure for both possibilities. Put $100 a month into an account that is strictly for maintenance and the post-factory warranty days. In 36 months you will have over $3600... surely enough to seriously defray the cost of most calamities.
Also, all you have to have left on the odo... within the warranty period, is at least 1000 miles... and you can then buy the extended warranty and/or extended mechanical warranty that your local dealer sells. If you keep all the services current as you should, and fix all mechanical "hickeys" as you should...then they should have no problem selling you any warranty(s).
Bottom line... do all your services and keep the car in tip top shape and you do not have to worry about the purchase of the extended warranty (maintenance or otherwise) until you reach the near end of of your factory free maintenance period (3yrs / 36k miles) and/or the factory warranty period (4yrs / 50k miles).
