Why The Remote Hatch Opening ???

The only way it would make sense is if it is supposed to actually go up (so you can load while your hands are full), but my hatch , when activated by remote key, only unlatched and moved about a half inch. Is that due to the pressure thing we've read about (with the grill in the boot cover remedy), or is it just another useless gimicky feature?

BTW, I had mine reporogrammed to do windows opening from the remote. Now THAT'S a great feature when the heat index is over 100 like it is today...getting some air in before you get inside!

Has anyone tried removing the parcel shelf and then trying the remote opening of the boot/hatch?

My 330Ci had remote boot release - it only unlocked it and popped the boot about half an inch.
It's not the same as Mercedes where the boot lid opens all the way once remotely unlatched.
I guess it's the way BMW do things...

What do you expect?
This isn't a £50,000 7 series or S-class where it is still an option to get the "comfort" opening and closing of the boot. I also notice that the new VW Phenom has this auto boot opening and closing too.
One feature I think that is reserved for high end luxury cars
Besides if it did open automatically I think the "safety" people would have a say somewhere along the line

MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime

Quentin Wilson broke the boot on the Phaeton by just trying to open it (some program I saw on TV the other day), so even with the most expensive cars, they will never work flawlessly, have asked for the following to be programmed on my car..

1) Different indicator flashes for status (shut, open, problem)

2) Automatically locking doors over 12mph

3) Remote closing and opening of the windows with the keyfob

And another one that I have forgotten.

Funny you should ask, I just tried it, or at least the same idea, by tilting a rear seat forward to achieve the same thing. And guess what, it makes not the slightest difference , so I'm afraid I don't buy into the story of the grill in the parcel shelf fix.

At least I don't have to be sorry that Stonk hasn't got the grill.

I don't think it's the vacuum effect holding the tailgate shut when you remote release, but rather its weight. The hydraulic lifts don't have enough mechanical advantage to raise the tailgate until it's opened a few inches. So when you pop the catch with the remote, technically it opens, but it just sits there and catches up again on the second stop as soon as you release the remote.

Why I wish this feature would work is because the tailgate gets so filthy under normal driving conditions. So when you turn up for an important business meeting you get your attache case out of the boot of your Cooper S and go give Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Ted Turner or whoever a roadgrime-filthy handshake.

Hmmm, I know it's been discussed before, and I agree there's little point. On the other hand how many hatchbacks do you know that have a hatch popper that would allow the hatch to open fully "automaticaly". Martin L has I think hit the proverbial nail. Not only a safety issue, but you wouldn't want to be parked close in front of another car or even a wall and hit the button without thinking..... OUCH !!!.

A "boot" on the other hand is an entirely different matter as it opens within the length of the car.

(PS. I majored on the "Bleeding obvious" )

Ummm, I can't. Someone somewhere probably finds it useful for one reason or the other......doesn't it just open the hatch and leave the rest of the car locked for instance ?

Do I have a point, or do I not have a point.

Go on Basil just admit it, it’s totally and utterly useless.

Is there an interior hatch release button, or is this remote feature likely to be my best bet for getting out of the back of car when I wake up in the morning?

I saw a post about the MINI here or elsewhere that said the grill at the back was to enhance the exhaust note -- there was no mention of the hatch opening easier, though that did sound like a better reason to me.

Mia,

While my dealer is not able to do ALL the features (missing software or such), he was able to do "comfort opening via remote" for the windows & sunroof & auto locking on start off. I'm in Miami, Florida and the dealer is South Motors MINI.

Good luck!

Cathy

OK so there may be a new grill. Anybody know how the flow through ventilation works?

My wife has a new beetle and the key button will unlock the boot so when you get to the car you just lift it to throw in the groceries. It is very handy. It beats messing with the key or opening the door to unlock the boot. The fault with the beetle is that you can't open without the key or tripping the inside release. The Mini is great with the rubber pad and electric control at the gate. Simple and water proof. If you want fancy look at the Lincoln Navigator. Now there's a barge full of gismos.
