I have 2 number plates i need to sell, S55PUR and V111A OK. In your experience where would they be best advertised. Thanks. (I have put them in the for sale section.)

Maybe try newreg.co.uk and then select sell a plate!

Erm they probly charge commision tho, but i think u'll probbably get more people looking at them on there than say ebay!

Can someone explain the novelty of "number plates" to an American?

I believe you call them "Vanity Plates" & they have to be renewed every year & only valid in each state.
Over here they are sold at the Market Value ( whatever that is perceived to be at the time ), but are with you (or the car) for as long as you deem necessary ... until resold.

So a plate with a name on, (say ... J4MES), is a both a very valuable Commodity & Investment

All the reg companies tell you your plate is worth a fortune, you register with them and wait, and wait and wait.

Ebay might be a better place for a quick honest sell... ( in the end I sold mine to a workmaye who had the right initials )
