England GROUP BUY - JL Audio Stealth Sub

Hi

Has anyone here installed the JL Audio Stealth Sub? For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's a sub and box made by JL Audio that has been specifically to fit into the side of the boot of the new Mini. It is very compact and fully carpeted so that it doesn't intrude too much on the boot space - hence the Stealthness!

For more info, please see http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/minicooperD.html

I've not heard one yet, but I've heard reports that they sound fantastic. I've also heard the sub that is used in another application and that was very impressive. I know that there are some people on here who have already got these and would be interested to hear any good or bad points of them.

The only problem is that they are fairly expensive (£500 - £550). I would be interested if anyone knows where it can be purchased cheaper. Also, perhaps if there is enough interest from members on the site, perhaps we could arrange a group buy?

Thanks

James

I'd be all for that.

I used to have a contact that deals with JL.

Let me see if he's still around on my M3 board.

Also very interested!

Definately interested in a group buy. I've been considering buying one anyway so the thought of getting one cheaper sounds almost as good as the sub will!

Cheers, Pete.

Black/Black Cooper S with chili and just bout everythin else. Tinted and ridin on 18" Kahn RSC. Massive sound install with DVD, sub, amp, blue suede everywhere, false floors, unbelievable!

Got the Stealth Sub installed from an installer that had one in stock & wanted to move it out of inventory. Got two hundred US off the final install. Sounds great but now I feel the need to upgrade the other stock items. This stealth box is being powered by a JL Audio 250/1 amp.
My only drawback is I think when I have the time I might upgrade the RCA cable connection for quicker response times to the stock head unit. I'm not a bass hound so I keep my factory head unit bass levels two notches past the middle. My wife is not happy w/ the encroached boot space. We also had the installer beef up the insulation in the boot storage compartment to the left. I think the bass has already cuased some of my windscreen cracks to expand...
Overall happy w/ the install. No holes drilled only factory holes used..

Contacted a number of suppliers but not had much joy getting the price down. The RRP is £540 and the lowest I got offered was around £520 - this includes VAT. I decided to go straight to the UK distributors of JL Audio as I work for a company who could become a JL Audio dealer. I spoke to a very helpful guy at JL Audio who said that it wouldn't be a problem and hinted that there could be some big savings if we purchased a large quantity (as they have to ship them from the USA on a pallet).

I need to come back to them with a definite quantity before they will give me a price, but if I was to say £440 would there be much interest? This is a £100 saving on the RRP - almost a 20% reduction.

Thanks

Just had confirmation from one of the companies that I contacted that we can have them for £420 inc. VAT if we can get a big enough group together! This is fantastic value, but we need a lot of people to achieve this!

Had a couple more suppliers come back to me, and I would say that there is a good chance that the final price will be slightly lower than £420. I've now had a chance to see this item in person and can promise you that it looks and sounds the bees knees! Anyway, I'm happy to purchase at £420 - others who would also be interested in purchasing at this price, please add your name to the list. Please don't add your name to the list unless you are seriously interested as it will lead to problems later.

I did look into the other solution. To purchase the JBL sub used in the stealth box separately is £130. Although this means that you are paying over £270 for the box, over £170 more than buying the other box I see that it has the following advantages:
  • It doesn't look like a sub - anyone who looked in on the boot would assume it was a spare tyre or something - good for security
  • It can be fitted and removed easily
  • It is made out of fibreglass rather than MDF and is therefore lighter and will give a better sound quality
  • The entire unit has been designed for the sub and the acoustics of the Mini. When you look at it, a lot of design has gone into it to ensure you get the optimum sound quality

After carrying out extensive research I am convinced this is the best sub available for the Mini. People who are in doubt, all I can say is try to go and look and listen to one - you will change your mind!!

Each one of your points (accept the second one) have no foundation. I'm not being arsey but point 1, It looks like a sub box. Point 2, Same as others, point 3, lighter doesn't give better sound quality, heavier actually has it's advantages, and point 4, If you believe that spend your money. The JBL (Just Bloody Loud) sub is average and the box at £270 is criminal. Go for it brother!

Wasn't suggesting otherwise.

It's just a rip off.
